Hey guys,

For the past 4 years one thing I have wanted to do is drive through Australia, 70% of the reason why I bought a Land Rover in the first place.

Though sadly this year when I finally got my Landy my dream was pretty much crushed considering I worked out it would cost just shy of 10K to get the Landy shipped out there (return) full of the equipment I would need as well as the return flights for me and finally the price of fuel.

The original plan was -

Ship into Perth - Kalgoorli - Alice Springs - Melbourne - Yathong Nature Reserve - Brisbane for a nice relax on the Gold Coast - Ship Landy home while I have fun.

Nice mix of outback driving and towns also planning on seeing ayresrock. Also got family in most the places being half Aussi, so accomodation was less of an issue.

I still really want to do this but is there a cheaper way? Im guessing there probably isnt, thought it might be worth an ask from more experienced members who have done this kind of thing.

Any advice would be great, I also know theres a hell of a lot of prep to going into a 6000 - 8000km journey in the hot desert with little or no help from others but that will all come when and if this trip will be viable.

I wont be going alone, though it will be just one Landy.

TBH I looked it up and came to the same conclusion though it would make a 3 - 4 month trip into almost a year. Too much for me!

Cheers man! Just waiting on a bumper to fit them to!
 
Also thought about that too but want to do it in my Landy! Somthing I know and am comfortable with for such a long time.

Year done my gap year an achieved nothing! lol + if its not in a Land Rover it just aint as fun!
 
Some Aussies have a saying that goes..
If you want to drive into the bush, you take either a land rover or a land cruiser.
If you want to come back from the bush, you take a land cruiser..

Good luck with all that, sounds good to me.. I dunno, but have you looked into driving there and doing ferry crossings..?
 
What about the family already out there buying and prepping a vehicle for you? Then sell it again when you come home.

I know it's a dream to drive your own, but reality might mean a change of plans, it always does!! ;)
 
Need to find out about that, may be the only way.

Just trying to find out if there is a viable way to get Landy there and back.

Wouldnt be setting off for at least 12 - 14 months minimum, may decide in that time that I do want to overland it there and shipping back wouldnt be too much of a hit in cash. Make a crazy ass trip of it, though before that would want to know my Land Rover better than the back of my hand.
 
Do you want to share a 40ft container out of South Korea or Vladivostok (Siberia) Sept/Oct 2013?

I will be shipping my 90+trailer to Aus from there.

As has been said, its not economically viable to ship your landy for a few months to Aus but it has been done. Speak to Brendan at 'overlander4x4' Home page he has shipped his 110 back and forth after spending 3-6months out there on his own.

Did you factor in the cost of the Carnet? Aus requires one at 150%

Did you factor in cost of AQIS (sp?)

If your not planning on staying I would look at renting one or getting to know the local LR clubs and tagging along on a trip into the outback. You would be surprised where you can get a campervan and most of the roads in Aus are just that... roads. You don't 'really' need a landy.

Carnet is £150% of the vehicle value + around ~ $8000 import duty.

Even though its only a temp import the Aussies want approx $8000 to cover it as well as the usual 150%!

So depends what you have to what it will cost.

Using an insurance company to cover it our 90 will likely come in around £1500 for 12 months when all is said and done. I think you get 1/2 of that back when you return the CDP and if you re-new for another 12 months you don't pay the import duty on that 2nd 12 months so it will be a lot cheaper.

I live in Australia and have driven most of the outback tracks in a 1975 SWB series 3 and stiil have it out there, At the moment Im in the uk having just done atrip to China and ending up in Mongolia then having a mad dash through Russia as I onlly had a 10 day Visa.
I will be back in Australia 8th November. If anyone would like any information on the hiring or buy of vehicles you can pm me here.
The vehicle i used for the last trip was a range rover and some that took a lot of people out of their comfort zone to think that it would actually be used for what it was built for.
 
I would drive it there.
1. Calais to Kyrgyzstan
Take 3 weeks to get to the Chinese border at Krygystan, thats 4100 miles with 21 days = average of 200 miles per day, what you don't do one day, then need catch up on the next day..

Onto Kashgar in Xingjiang province, head south to Guangzhou.
Kashgar to Guangzhou is 3,500 miles, that's 17 days, average of 200 miles per day, what you don't do one day, then need catch up on the next day..

OK, so now your going to say,"but it costs a lot of dosh to travel through China".
Well at the moment it does, but watch this space.
My Chinese wife is taking tour guide exams in middle December, so maybe after say May 2013, we could look at doing 4x4 & 2 wheel adventure off road tours through China.

Just make shure the vehicle is spotlessly clean before you ship as Australian quarentine is very strict and if you have to have it cleaned there i dont know what it would cost but for 2 bicycles it was $500
 
I have just come back from a trip to china and we could not do that route we had to exit from Kaskar into mongolia and then get new visas to re-enter china and then the Chinese government cancelled the entry permits for the vehicles so there we were stuck in Mongolia. the bikes flew them out to Thailand but i had to get a 10 day transit visa for Russia and did about 5000 miles in 10 days from Ulaan Bataar to Latvia.
I had a backup plan if i felt i could not do it by getting a Kazakhstan visa and then getting another Transit visa.
 
Would be a great trip but as said very expensive to ship your car to Aus and back.

I did ship my land rover over the Australia from the Uk , but I was staying here so no need to send it back to the uk.

When we got it over here we then did an eight month trip around Australia in my 90, I now live in Brisbane



We did the trip you were talking about , this is the track from Kalgoolie to Ayres rock .



But as it is like driving from Southampton to Inverness on a dirt track with no fuel stops or mobile phone coverage or even noting on the radio , you still have to do 60-70 mph on roads like this.



And remover fuel is not around that much. Diesel not bad ( for Australia and the distance but petrol. Yeah not much of it in the outback due to aboriginals sniffing it )



Due to being in a 90 we had a camper trailer as well.



But the views are well worth it



But if you want to bring a car here does not matter how clean you make it before it leaves the uk they will clean it when it gets here. So work on that

You can hire land rovers from a company in Sydney. But would be cheaper to hire a Nissan or Toyota from serval hire companies. This can be in the form of 4x4 campers too. They will come with everything you need for your trip. These companies are used to what you want to do so you could pick it up in Perth and drop off in Brisbane.

I would suggest this rather than importing a truck and sending it back.
