Pistons and rings

Hi guys have just stripped my series 3 2.25 diesel due to lots of blue smoke. Mic'd up the bores and put the rings in them to check the gap in the butts which is massive ie (0.120'') when in should be (0.014''-0.019''). The bore measurements are all fine only showing about 0.002'' wear off the original size (3.562''). when the rings are on the pistons the clearance in the grooves on all the compression rings is uneven and above tolerance (0.0025''-0.0045'')
I am going to order new pistons and standard rings and re-hone the bores. will this be ok and will it reduce the butt gap in the rings when they are in the bores and hopefully help/cure my smoking problem I appreciate any thoughts or feedback cheers.

where have you measured greatest wear will be across bores at the top were rings sweep ,there will be next to no wear fore and aft of bore,gap of rings must be measured in ring swept are too,i ve seen very few blocks with as little wear as you have ,what did you measure with

Half way down swept area, ring pushed in with piston to ensure it's square in bore.

the greatest wear is at the highest part rings sweep on passenger side ,thats the part that needs measuring using front and back of bore or bottom as comparison as they dontwear there,3.562 is std bore size on 4 cylinder landy engines but doesnt mean bores are or where that size as would be bored to piston + clearance size which may be upto 2 thou either way,only real way to measure is with bore compariter and micrometer

very funny but he would need to know how to do it properly otherwise why bother,he may well have done it properly and have very good bores or not and fooling himself as checking bore wear as you described which is method for ring gapping would give false result

Do you get out much mate, or indeed at all?? Here, have a pint on me. :beer2:

With old tech like a 2 and a 1/4 diesel Landy all them daft measurments aint needed, just clean the piston tops, determine if std or + whatever, if pistons and bores are servicable, shove a honing bar or glaze buster down the bores, fit new rings, re-build and drive the ****er.

i thought you where supposed to be a mechanic not a bodger,whats the point of giving **** advice ,**** advice dosent mean laid back fun guy ,and anbody trying to give the right way of doing it must be anal with people problems ,its just **** advice

I think you need to take your head out of your arse, take a deep breath of fresh air and chill.
Most of the stuff you post is just reference to your tech books, good stuff but it don't apply in the real world.
Low tech stuff like Series engines can be "bodged" cheaply, that's why so many are still on the road all over the world.

i dont post from books just what i know or remember ,maybe its because ive rebuilt engines and alot of series engines proffessionally, that i find stupid bodge artist like you difficult, series engine still needs to be done properly, i still work in real world and know been a real mechanic/engineer that customers wouldnt be happy with "its old **** mate just slap an old piston in""just stick some thicker oil in your cog box"and you try to rubbish me fook knows what your welding on cars is like

No one can 'remember' all the tech **** you post mate, we all have to refer to books.
I live and work in the real world, try telling your customer that the repairs done by the book are going to cost you £3000.00, or I could do you a 'bodge' that will get you back on the road for thousands of miles for about £500

of course they can i do,i dont keep manuals at home, i ve rebuilt all landrover units except for latest ones and used to work for company were we built large numbers of different units once youve built a batch of tens or more of a given unit one after another which runs into hundreds over the years the info mostly sticks ,reboring and rebuilding engines in numbers gives some insight ,you can rebore block and fit new pistons and bearings for less than £200 minus labour in the real world

Bores measured with an internal stick micrometer and piston ring gap measured using feeler guages. Most wear is side to side like you said and nearer the top

i would have siad you where lucky then ,hone it well as this is more important than ring gap been too large new rings are often to large and need filing to fit,i allways fit new pistons with rings there cheap enough and better than cord rings as they accelerate bore wear
