Evening,

How easy is it to change both the Valve seals and Piston Rings ?

Is it a DIY job that can be done with basic tools

Or is it better to buy that parts I need/want and take it to my preferred garage ?

Is it worth renewing the Head gasket at the same time ?

Cheers for any advice !

I'm about to do the piston rings on my chevy 454. What I've been told if you're doing it without the grips is to do one then come back and do another later

Hug would be a good plan seeing as they aren't expensive

no point in doing rings if you dont hone bore and if bore is worn , youd need feeler guage and a file for ring gaps, it is definitely better with a piston ring pliers and compressors

Grey/blue smoke on start up, grey while driving,

Told this is a sign of worn rings,

You think a rebuild is needed ?

Might pick up a new turbo and injectors as well then

can you do a compression test first dry then second test with some oil down bores, will indicate if rings are poor , or remove head and look , rebores usually cost £120-160 new pistons £50 each ,starting on first touch of the key is a good indicator compressions good , remove pipe from turbo see what oil if any comes out whilst running

Whats more likely to of failed/degraded on a 125k 300tdi then ?

Not exactly mechanical minded, learning as I go which has so far done me good,

Starts no problem,

only as said before, blue & Grey smoke on start up, grey stays thought duration of engine running,

In the event of a rebuild should the guys I take my Defender to (who are really top notch, who do you recommend ?

I hear good things about turner engineering ?

Also am I right in thinking that a rebuild for the engine should sorted first over a R380 with worn bulk rings ?

Oil burning on startup could be valve stem seals. Grey smoke is probably just injection pump turned up too high?

Just because you haven't done it doesn't mean the previous owner hasn't! Most 300TDi have been tweaked in some way or other
I would definitely be looking at timing and fueling etc before going for a full rebuild, you'll get into some serious money doing that!

Previous owner was my step dad(owned for 10 years), 1st owner was a Vet (owned for 2) and I've had it for 5,

At least for the last 15 years it hasnt been tweeked, thinking it maybe timing going and stem seals, since I know I shouldnt be playing with it,

Just gonna point my garage in the right direction and ask them to check the turbo while they are at it to check for oil and play in its internals,

Cheers guys !

Going to get all belts done I think,

Not knowing much about my 300tdi (all I've done to it is replace the alternator and the belt tensioner)

How many belts/chains are there ?

Not just serpentine and timing is it ?

Hi Johnny,

FYI, look up 300 tdi timing belt on here, lots of info , plus landrover toolbox on you tube have a video showing how to do one. Only two belts on the 300tdi. one for timing, and the serpentine you can see.

cheers
