Last year i overheated my D90 300Tdi due to a water pump leak and had to have the head skimmed and despite valve clearances being correct it sounds like a typical tappets noise. I am told that the piston arm shims or bushings are probably stretched and need replacing. I did the work on the head last year.

Question: How much harder is is for me to go in and either change the pistons and/or the big and small end bushes/shims. I have been quoted £650 from an independent LR mechanic. If i do it myself, what kit and parts do i need? Can i do the work from below so i don't have to take the head off again?

I'd really appreciate advise on this as business is not great at the mo and i can't really shell out to have it done for me.

Sleeve? I'm not sure, only going on what someone told me. if you can picture the piston rod big end, is there some sort of sleeve or shim in there which can distort and need replacing. I'm in the dark here, so go easy on me.

In short No , head has to come off, pistons out, possibly bore, new pistons and rings and while you are at it fit new bigend and main bearings, as for the small extra cost of bearings do it while its apart. The bore and pistons/rings is dependant on how hot it got. HTSH
