I know i'm leaving myself open for some stupid answers here but can sombody tell me what in the landrover world is known as a pink panther? i've read a few articles in mags writen about various shows, events ect and that there had been some there but what the hell are they?

I'm sure there will be better replies but I can tell you they were long wheel base series 11a's painted pink for use by special forces in the desert. They were open topped and were covered in kit and guns and stuff.

The Pink Panther Land Rovers are desert patrol vehicles used by the SAS. As you can see they really are pink. Pink is said to be one of the best camouflage colours for the desert. One often sees factory photographs with a driver resembling Lawrence of Arabia, or is it Peter O'Toole, and wearing Arab head gear.

Special features include sand tyres, a novel spare wheel mounting, no doors, machine gun mounting, lots of fuel tanks and jerry cans. Everything is aimed at keeping the vehicle as low and inconspicuous as possible

The Pink Panther was a special long range patrol vehicle created by Marshall Specialist Vehicles of Cambridge for the British army.

The standard as-new colour was in fact Land Rover's usual green but they were repainted this amazing pink colour for use on desert patrols as it is supposed to make for low visibility in that environment. After that the nickname was inevitable.

Taylor (1996) reports that 72 Pink Panthers were made.

The Australian army had its own locally built equivalent variant

I had never noticed before that they painted the tyres. So that means it must be good camouflage.

Thanks for the suprisingly sensable replies all,I didn't think they would actually be pink i thought there must be some other reason for the name.Suprised at pink being used in the desert too!
