i they have marks but not really dished?

Put the edge of a steel rule across them. If you see daylight below at centre they are dished. Then the choice is up to you. A couple of thou
should be ok. Remember to put them back where they came from.

ok i have checked them all with a decent steel rule and i can see a little light through them all in the centre?? but not bad dished it is very little the cmshaft looks very clean not brown or anything like that!! now what??

what part do i squeeze etc vice up the bottom part near where would touch the cam shaft yeah?

put a suitable soket in the cup end and squeeze in a vice, avoid damaging the wire retaining spring and protect the flat side that goes to the cam!

Squeeze the part where the ball end of the push rod sits using a spacer. Best to leave them overnight in a container filled with clean engine oil to give them a bit of a prime. They will probably rattle like hell when you first start the engine until they are full...this is normal.

they are starting to get dished. I'd be on the safe side and put new ones i, seeing as you have already got them out.

The choice is now yours. Each cam lobe will be worn to suit each tappet. That is why i stressed to put them back in the same place they came from. You could fit new ones but that would generally be bad practice. Because the cam lobes are worn with an high spot towards the centre of the tappet, fitting new ones will put a lot of load on a small area. This causes rapid wear of the cam lobe. You may in short time need a new cam and new tappets doing this. How long a camshaft lasts in a motor is sometimes decided in the first ten minutes of the motor being started from new. Engine oil is no good for initial lubrication of new cam shafts. You need something thick and very slippery. Wynns or STP is ideal. So providing you know where each tappet came from and they are not dished more than a few thou i would put them back in with plenty of STP or Wynns on them and the cam. If you don't know where they came from then you have opened a bag of worms and you may as well fit new ones, again with plenty of lubricant running engine very gently for quite a long time to try and avoid the cam goring. It of course depends how deep you want to go into the motor, when all you started with was blown head gasket. You could of course fit a new cam and tappets, followed by busting the bores and fitting rings whilst your at that fit new shells then an oil pump. The list goes on. Personally if you did not have any tapping and funny noises from the cam and tappets in the first place i would just have done the gaskets and left well alone.

theres was no funny noises of any kind like the tappets and it ran spot on before this happened and bear in mind i NEVER EVER keep a car more than 6-7 months so unless you guys can guarantee me the engine will go with in this time i dont think ill bother i just want to it going.
BUT if i was planning on keeping it i would deff replace the cam, tappets and a few other bits as well but i get bored of cars very very quickly and only got this as i had never had one before, so its going well driven it for 3 hrs since i got it!!

Ok stick the tappets back where they came from with some lub as suggested. Rover V8s have always been prone to head gasket failure it is inherent in their design. That's probably why General Motors kicked them out in the first place.

ok wammers thanks whats the exact make/name of lube you would suggest for the tappets and best way to apply?
thanks in advance i have had some great advice on here! soon i will be able to give minor advice after all this lol

Wynns engine oil additive or STP (Scientifically treated petrolium). They are the trade names. They are oil additives, thick and slimy, they stay in place and don't run off as engine oil does. I always use them for assembling rebuilds. Some may not. They are not cheap about £6.00 or £7.00 a tin. But i get several rebuilds from a tin. Your local motor factors should have them, if not Halfrauds have them. You could of course just bite the bullet and use plenty of engine oil or better still a little EP 90 gear oil and take the chance, most mechanics would do that. Just a good coat on cam and tappet. Then some engine oil around them. They must not be put back dry that is the most important part.
Good luck.
