Petrol engines in a Series

Here is one for the series gurus:

How did the petrol 4 cylinder engines (77bhp) fair with towing and heavy usage etc back in the day.

Did they suffer from any problems because they were under-powered, such as head gasket failure, premature wear and tear etc?

Never had any problems in the late fifties,and then we were using a

mere 74 octane to lug everthing and the kitchen around with us.

I think HGF etc has become more noticeable with engines running on their limits. high compression ratios and electronic management to reduce emissions means you cant over engineer a mahoosiv solid lump like the series engines. If anything the low power is due to poor air/fuel mixing and flow and poor efficiency through the drive train.

Read aboot (& showed Daft) an article about a III with a stroked, gas flowed series petroil lump in it with a top speed of around 100mph so they are capable of a lot more than they're 'tuned' for as standard.
