We have had nothing but trouble with our dog insurance
We looked into it in great detail when we bought our Bassett
And went with the company that gave the best cover but after the 12 months it went up "a lot" almost double
So we found a better deal with someone else
We had to do the same thing the following year

Now this is where the problems come
1 if you take out insurance you need to stay with whoever you started with because
any problem the dog has had or been treated for in the past will no longer be covered
2 look for a policy that has no excess "most will have a £50 excess" but the vets will charge that every time you go there so your no better off
3 check in detail what it covers because if they can get out of paying they will
4 all vets charge over the top because they know most owners have insurance so it's the insurance company that pays in the same way if you got your car repaired via an insurance pay out the body shop will quote more than if you paid for it yourself
And because of this a lot of the main insurance company's are pulling out of the pet game as they are losing money
So you could end up using the some company for say 6 years and then they turn round and tell you there not going to cover you any more as they are no longer doing pet insurance just when you need it the most

Hence we don't have insurance for our dog any more

I pay about £12 a month for my pet insurance, I took it on when I took a springer off one of the missus's friends that was'nt looking after it right, the springer died of cancer a few years later then I bought a giant mutated labradoodle, every bill i get is around £50-100 quid, when the springer had to be put down, the new giant had bad ears and blood in his poo each costing me a £50 visit to the vet, my pet insurance only pays out after £80 and I have to pay the first £80, so basically it has paid nothing to the health of my dogs but if I cancelled it my dog would no doubt break his leg and it would cost me a fortune.

Your buggered if you do and buggered if you dont, be very selective and read carefully what it is you want, most standard vet bills will be around the £50 mark which wont be covered due to the excess, in my opinion a springer is a working dog and you wont take that out of him, they run and jump everywhere and eat everything in sight (they will even eat slugs and snails which can kill them) so I would have pet insurance to cover the obvious broken leg bills which can be in the region of £500 but make sure that the excess on the policy isnt so high that the smaller things your dog needs doing isnt going to leave you out of pocket.

hope you have fun with your springer they certainly are the most loving dog you could ever own but must be walked plenty or they become very frustrated, also they are massive company dogs, they dont like to be left alone for long periods and that was the only reason I didnt get another due to the missus working now.

Make sure you get a policy that is a 'life time' one. A lot of the cheaper one will only cover a condition for a year. That's ok if it is a one off like a broken leg, but if your pet develops diabetes or something that will mean it needs care for the rest of it life, after the 1st year it will be up to you to find the money.

Through experience I can second this. One of mine developed diabeties three+ years ago and is on twice daily injections. It cost a fortune every month but is well work the sacrifice as we have had, and remain having, great fun with a really lovable dog! I,m lucky to be able to get the money together but am aware that for many the dog would have to be put down. Be warned!

Also there are online pharmacists, our old GSD was epilectic, cost £200 a month from the vet, found ukvetsonline (sp) got prescriptions from the vet (they dont tellyou that) vet bill £50 medicine bill £50.

Price isn't everything, if your pets Ill and you have to pay first and then they don't pay you have massive problems,

Our dogs are insured with direct line, when we had a clame they payed out not the cheapest but you get what you pay for in life.

I'm a gamekeeper with a team of seven springer spaniels, insurance is a bitch! But, I only pay £5 per month each. This is only for accident, injury and public liability cover though. Doesn't cover illness.

I used to be with Dog Breeder's Insurance Co and they were brilliant with a Golden Retriever that I had at the time. Then they got taken over by Pet Plan.
Can't say owt about Pet Plan because I've not had to claim for years (touches wood).

I hit warned off pet plan as they have a habit of not paying claims apparently
