I am looking at towing a fairly long and heavy caravan. The Pajero
has sufficient kerb weight and maximum towing weight to theoretically
cope. However the price difference between a S/H 3 door and 5 door
means that the SWB version is in my budget.
Can anyone comment on the towing ability of the SWB 2.8 Pajero. Can I
do it or must I have the LWB version.

Hi
The "law" says you must only tow 85% of the weight of the tow vehicle with a
braked trailer.
The 2.8TD SWB weighs 2.1 tonne, so if my calculator is working properly, you
can "legally" tow up to 1.785 tonne.
You should try the Pajero Owners Club Web site
http://www.pocuk.com/phpBB2/ it's entirely free and I'm sure someone will
have the answers for you.

Actually, the caravan club suggests 85% as a safe towing weight, it has
nothing to do with the law.

The law says:-
You can tow trailers to the maximum trailer weight your vehicle is plated
for and you are licenced for, providing the correct braking system is
fitted.

Up to 750kg no brakes needed
above 750kg to 3500kg overrun brakes
above 3500kg coupled brakes eg air or hydraulic linked to the braking sytem
of the towing vehicle.

A defender 110 fitted with air brakes can tow up to 4000kg (not the station
wagon, that's only plated to 3500kg trailer weight)

Thanks for the education Edd, ''a little knowledge can be dangerous'' as
the saying goes.
I have no towing experience at all and was just trying to help, didn't mean
to mis inform anyone.
