Painting Questions

I may be off to buy the paint for my rebuild today and I just had a few questions over paint. I have gathered that cellulose paint is the best for home spraying. Also it needs to be mixed 50:50 with thinners.

If I went to the paint shop with a list:
Cellulose primer 5L
Thinners 5L
Cellulose paint 5L LRC644

Would they know what I wanted or would I be asked other questions that I would have no idea how to answer?

Dilution isnt as simple as 50/50 - need to do a viscosity test

More thinners is always helpful for clean up

If you have some bare ali you'll need some etch primer to

Also a shed load of different grade wet and dry paper or pads and tack cloths are also helpful

have a chat with them, you'll want a visc cup or filter.

do they all still carry celly? i know you can still get it, but they have moved on to water based

Anti bloom thinners?
Mixing cups
Mixing paddles
Gun wash
Roll of decent masking paper
2" tape
1" tape
Decent mask

I'll speak to them on the phone tomorrow before I go to see them. Hopefully may be able to get a quote as well.

Things on the list:
Cellulose LRC644 5L
Cellulose primer (I presume grey) 5L
Thinners 5L

Is that too much paint? I once had my pants pulled down when I bought wayyy too much paint for a project - so I learnt the hard way myself!

I'd rather buy too much than too little. From what i've gathered it depends on how many coats and whether you do the inside as well which I am going to do.

Quantity seems fine (it's what I used) but make sure that if you have BARE body metal you'll need etch primer which (the stuff I used) was two part and had a limited shelf life after mixing.
I'd suggest that you get two types of thinner: fast and slower...I think they're timed in some fashion? It was a long time back. Probably the 5l fast and something like 1 - 2l slower.
Mind you, I'm no automotive finisher and my current one has got Hammerited with the spray gun!

As a guide, when I painted my 90 I used:

1) 0.30 litre - 1st coat - both wings & seatbox (outer surfaces)
2) 0.50 litre - 1st coat - bulkhead (full coverage)
3) 0.45 litre - 2nd coat - both wings & seatbox
4) 0.45 litre - 2nd coat - bulkhead
5) 0.30 litre - 3rd coat - bulkhead
6) 0.45 litre - 1st coat - rear tub
7) 0.45 litre - 2nd coat - rear tub
8) 0.30 litre - 1st coat - doors, windscreen hinges, vent flaps
9) 0.40 litre - 2nd coat - doors, windscreen hinges, vent flaps
10) 0.45 litre - 1st coat - bonnet (outer), windscreen frame (full coverage), tailgate (outer)
11) 0.50 litre - 2nd coat - bonnet, windscreen frame, tailgate

So all in I used around 4.6 litres.

Cheers guys. Went to the paint shop and had a problem. Not realising that you cant get perlecent paint in cellulose, I only came away with the primer and the thinners and a mind thinking about what colour to choose now. So back to the drawing board with the colour but at least I can get the primer done.

you are max powering your fender?

get a brush and a pot of hammerite.. do iiit
