P38DT Heater controls not working

Hi all. As above. I have the manual control panel with the knobs and buttons. The direction control buttons wont work (stuck in the first position of face level vents). I can't demist the windscreen in the mornings. Are the buttons a common failure issue or is this a BECM fault. Sometimes when I first start the car, the programme mode button will be illuminated and the fans and demisters will come on full blast. I'm not sure if this is due to the fact that I had been pressing that button so many times on my previous journey or an electrical/becm problem. Anyone shed any light on this as it's a right PIA with these winter mornings....
