Hi

I need a spare key for my range rover. I have spoken to the service department at LD and they have quoted £120. Is there anyway I could get a replacement from somewhere else and take it to LD to programme?

Dealer only and make sure you don't get the same key number as the one you have or it will not work, if you are not sure if your key is a one or two, order a number three to be safe:)

I take it the two keys you get originally are visually the same? Ta.
 
The only way to tell them apart was a small sticker on the back. But the stickers had a tendency to rub off so chances are you'll have no idea what number they are, other than the fact 1 and 2 came as standard. Ordering a new 2 will deactivate the old 2.
 
£120 is cheap, my spare was £150. As someone else has pointed out, order a #3 or #4 to be safe in case you override your existing key.
 
Also, make sure that the dealer understands how to order the new key as RR changed the stock numbering system last year and some dealers aren't aware so they might tell you there are no more 'spare' keys for P38s. This is rubbish and let me know if it happens as I have all the info on this subject.

Plus, you don't have to pay an additional £50.00 to have the key synched to the car by the highly skilled and expensively trained service manager either.

It's a piece of cake to do yourself and I have that info too.

Although the manual says syncing a new key on a Thor P38 is a matter of sticking it in the ignition and turning to II. (which did work to start the car but the remote locking didn't work). My car required me to put the new key in the unlocked driver's door, hold the lock button and then turn the key to the lock position until the central locking fires (about 10 secs), then return the key to the central position (button still held) remove and let go - at which point the remote locking fob was fully operational.
