P38A P38A 1996 4.6 Auto HSE water leaks into wheel well after completing the TSB.

Hi All,

I had the usual issue with water leaks into the wheel well. I completed the TSB for this by bending the seal mounting flange outwards and installing a new genuine LR seal with a bead of sealant.

This seemed to resolve all the leaks for a few months...but now they are back but not as severe.
To me, this time, the leaks must be coming from elsewhere as:
- the water is only visibly pooling randomly along the wheel well seams and bunts rather than the very lowest point like last time.
- the boot carpets aren't getting wet.
- the water only seems to get in after heavy rain or when driving along wet roads as opposed to last time when it would leak at the first sign of rain.

There's probably some more info about the leaks that will come to me once I've posted this!

Leaks from the roof seams under the plastic trims are known. Are you sure you bent the flange out enough? A smear of silicone grease on the rubber seal may help.

I'll have a look under the roof trims. Any tips for removing them without damaging them? I'm assuming they are brittle after 29 years in the sun.

I'm pretty confident I bent the flange far enough.
I also put a good bead of sealant in the groove of the seal before mounting it on the flange.
There was an immediate improvement after doing the above.

The boot carpets were getting soaked when it was leaking through the seal. This time the carpets seem bone dry. Although the leaks aren't as severe this time so maybe it's not as noticeable..

I had to bend mine a good bit more than stated in the TSB before the water ingress stopped completely. A thin smear of silicone grease on the rubber helps and it will show if there is a spot not making contact with the hatch.

I'll get some silicone grease and check the contact of the seal all the way round the hatch as my next move then.

I remember now I had to apply extra sealant to the top left and right hand corners of the hatch as water was still getting in there.
