P38 Rear Bumper

Recently noticed that the drivers side rear bumper was hanging low on my 2002 P38. On inspection I found that the metal sub frame which is fixed to the bumper side and takes the side fixing block had rotted to the point that the side fixing block is now safely fixed to the chassis but not the bumper. I have duly tied this up with copper wire it all looks ok from the outside but really only a temp repair. As it appears that it is a relatively simple job to remove the sub frame from the bumper (approx. 5 bolts and self tapping screw) can anyone tell me if it is possible to acquire just the metal sub frame or do I have to purchase a complete rear bumper just to get this simple part.

P.S. I have heard that this is a relatively common part for rusting away.

I'm just finishing my rear bumper repair after an idiotic 'kiss' with a railway sleeper.
Be prepared for some grief getting the side frame off. The 2 bolts holding it to the rear sub frame just span in the rivnuts on mine. I've not seen any of these sold separately but you could try breakers?

Mine went and I got a damaged bumper from a breakers and swoped it over onto my colour coded one. My outriggers that hold the plastic blocks were also rusted so I cut good one's from a rolling chassis and welded them on to mine. I think the previous owner used it to launch his boat into salt water. You havn't put in your location so i don't know if your close to my friendly breakers.

sorry I am in Inverclyde in Scotland so not really local.

It is a bit disappointing when you are expected to buy a full bumper for what is only really a relatively minor part. starting to wonder how long the copper wire will last and just adding a few more turns and checking every month or so. Will try the local breakers anyway and hopefully the temp repair will at least buy me some time that it is not critical.

Thanks MartynV8 for the advice. Maybe also be able to drill in at the side of the rivnuts and inject some superglue but not having had the bumper off yet to see if that is practical nothing more than thinking out loud just now.

I have the exact same problem. Took my bumper off today to inspect it as I suspected the metalwork underneath was in a sorry state. This is what I found! The mounting points have completely rusted out. I think it was only muck holding it on. I think I'll have to take it to a specialist to get new parts welded in. The metalwork inside the bumper is also shot so I may have to buy a whole new assembly. Does anyone know of a good breaker around South London?

The rear hanger brackets bolt in. http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-ANR2381 you need two of those and two of these, if they are nackered http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-ANR2500 but they are pretty daft money for what they are.

old post I know - mine is the same - going to get some galvanised sheet and make some new side subframes. just a bit of folding and drilling required if i make a cardboard template.
