What would people recommend for a relative off road novice P38 owner in Surrey? I used to do laning in a Discovery 1, but don't want to scratch the Rangie like I did that!

I was thinking more as to whether there might be a quarry, or areas which offer 'pay and play' days?

Plenty of P&P sites around. But they tend to be far more damaging than Greenlaning. I certainly wouldn't reccomend taking a "Posh" motor to a P&P. almost all greenlaning/P&P offers the risk of some form of damage. unless the route is specifically sorted with the express intention of providing a damagefree laning trip. My original advice is still the best you'll get on this subject..

Depends how far you want to travail. There is plenty on the Surrey Hampshire border. You can also go through GLASS. That or get an ordinance survey 1:20,000 or 1:50,000 map. but confirm the routs with the rights of way officer as some get tempory TRO's a lot, then when you find one go to you tube see if anyone has driven it so you can see what state there in. That's what I tend to do.

I'm very familiar with the OS maps; used them for navigation on the lanes many a time! Is it worth looking for some that aren't in wooded areas? (Hampshire and Surrey), do they exist?
Provided one isn't silly why should there be a risk of damage? I never damaged my Disco through just being careful, it's just that the holly bushes tended to beat the paintwork!

Yeah essentially, as in the greatest threat of the lanes (that I did) was to give the outside a 'brushed steel' effect. I'd prefer not to do that on a P38 for obvious reasons, but were the vegetation not there I'd be happy to tackle the topology of those lanes in it.
