P38 Heated Seats

Does anyone know how hard it is to repair the element in the back of the seat?

I have seen the tutorial on the base art already.

IMHO its not worth doing they just keep breaking all the time, its a pain not having them, but easy to live with after a while you get used to them not working, the passenger one has always worked fine (it don't get much use)

taking seats apart aint that bad as long as you have time patience and a few basic tools if you are going to change them go find a set out of a volvo they are bulletroof the whole car will die but the seats will still get warm, only problem i found was they dont get as hot as rr ones but they still keep your ass toasty only difference in fitting is thermal trip is in a slightly different place so you have to recess a bit of the base foam

Anyone know what fuse or relay does the heated seats? both mine are not working and it could be fuse/relay?

u GOT RAVE? IVE LOST ME DISC AND NEW D/LOAD KEEPS CRASHING :(

Good point. I struggle with the wiring diagrams in there though.

I'll have a look tonight and see if I can work it out (assuming SWMBO hasn't organised something).

I can send you a copy of my CD if you pm me your details if that's any help?

it wont be the fuse, have a look at the plugd beneath the seat, you will see that the two plugs are connected by a fly wire, the power goes into the base then out and into the back then back to the plug. one continuos loop. test continuity

i have repaired mine and as said above they go very quickly!

i might try the volvo ones, you can solder the thermal cut out off the original in that should give the same temp as original. i'd like to get my hands on a few meters of the heater wire but i have no idea where from!

so if they dont work they need fixin then? no fuse no relay just broke?

It does seem a bit odd to me that all of them are broken and not just in mine.

As I understand it (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong), the seat base element and the seat back elements are on different circuitys so if the base breaks the back should still work?

That being the case, what are the chances of all 4 being broken? That's what makes me think the problem is elsewhere. (Especially as my heated windscreen doesn't work either or my heated drivers side mirror).

From that link above the bottom has to work for the back to work, you can bypass the bottom so the back works

Ah, with you now. Think I'd rather have the bottom one working. Ah well.

Anyone happen to know the part number for a volvo element in case it comes to it? I've heard it suggested a few times, but have no idea what to ask for (or are all volvo seats the same)?

I reckon bypass the bottoms, After reading that link it looks like a boat load of hassle and what happens if your cant put the seats back together? sod em i'll leave it as it is

I'd be happy to pay someone to do it but I've not heard of anyone that does it.

This is just the kind of thing that should be covered in one of the LR mags but they all seem to hate P38s (especially LRO!).

Stupid really - the P38 is at an age where a lot of work is being done DIY, but the only articles etc seem to be on forums. If the mags promoted them a bit more, they might not only increase their readership, but it might help promote the aftermarket parts market as well if suppliers see that there is actually a market for them.

Anyone would think, looking at the LR mags, that nobody is interested in P38s. Grrr.

bloody hell, you set of girls, be told, its not hard, its time consuming but not hard at all, you only have to split the back and bottom then take the clips off round the edge then peel the seat leather up, pull the wires out and reconnect em, then put it all back together, you dont have to take the hog rings out. just cut the bit of material that holds the metal rod(not too much tho) and pull wires out a bit!!

better to get new elephants tho!!!
