Help!! My 2002 P38 automatic, selector cannot engage any gear, meshing noise when selecting park, I have changed transmission fluid and filter but no joy.....dashboard message ‘Transfer Divert’.
Please can anyone explain the fault....I’ve owned the car for many years but never experienced this particular problem before.

Hope you followed the correct procedure when refilling the gearbox. Engine and gearbox cold, fill until oil runs out of the filler, start engine, move slowly through the gears and back to park, top up with engine idling until oil trickles out of the filler.
Have you checked the oil level in the transfer box?
As Dan says, the transfer box has gone into neutral for some reason.

I did follow correct procedure when refilling the gearbox and then topped up during idling.
Then slowly through gear positions ... meshing noise persists when selecting park .... although slightly reduced in harshness of sound level.
Please bear with me and explain how do I remedy the transfer box problem ?

I have not yet checked the transfer box fluid level....will do that tomorrow.
Assuming the car is right hand drive, have you touched any of the fuses in the fuse box under the side of the drivers seat, in particular fuse 11?
If it's an automatic, have you tried moving the gear lever to the low range side and back?
Quite possibly, it's an electrical fault for which diagnostics might be helpful
The message "Transfer Neutral" tends to confine the problem to the transfer box rather than the gearbox. If you have accidentally selected low range and it has not been used for a long time, the motor may be partially seized which can lead to the drive transistors in the transfer box ECU being destroyed.

Thank you both Dan & Mark…. It was the fuse in No 11 …. I removed it and ‘Clunk’ and transmission problem resolved 😁😁😁
Now I have to figure out how long it’s been there AND who the bright spark is who inserted it in there 🥴🤔
Thank you both again for sharing your expertise 🥸

Nice to have a simple fix. F11 is unlikely to have been in there long because as soon as it's inserted and the ignition switched on Transfer Neutral is selected.
