Another "interesting" event on my P38. The oil filler cap was sticky and when I managed to turn it, the adapter that connects it to the cam cover came away too. I cleaned the adapter threads and carefully screwed it back into the cam cover using the two internal ears that it has. I then cleaned and lightly smeared the cap threads with red grease, so it now fits on and off smoothly.
Question: is just screwing the adapter back into the cam cover the right thing to do? Specifically, is there any locking ring or whatever on the underside, that might have fallen into the valve gear???
Seems like a dodgy design, where either thread could come undone when removing the cap.
