rite guys,
i watch th vid's u all post of ur greenlanin days out, and see all th pics, and i was jus wanderin, generally speakin how much of th time are u usin low range/and or got ya difflock engaged?r u constantly switchin difflock on and off when comin across mud, water, and rock or are ya leavin it engaged all th time. same goes wiv high/low range?
any info, i'd b grateful.

TEDDY

i keep in the highest gear possible, according to the terrain ahead, except when descending steep slopes, when I use low 1st.
i only engage difflock when about to ascend / decend steep slopes or when wheelspin is anticipated.

keeping the wheels turning but not spinning is the key to not getting stuck. the higher the gear, the less torque to the wheels, the less the likleyhood of spinning.

so when ya say highest gear poss, is that high in high range or highest in low range?r u guys not creepin along at very low speed all the time then?

i mean the highest gear possible.
whether that's in low or high range depends on the terrain.

yesterday, we did a steep lane. I went up in high second at barely above tickover - others went to low box. we all got up, but i had no worries about possible wheelspin.

ah well cheers for ur quick reply fella, reckon i'v got ALOT to learn b4 i venture out!

Only way to learn IS to venture out. Just go with someone with more experience.........or at least a winch...........or failing that a good long, strong strop.

Start with some gentle greenlaning or the easy bits at your local pay & play site.

That's the only way you'll learn to drive like they're 'sposed to be driven. ;)

of course, at low revs, yer more likely to stall the engine, which could be a problem on a steep hill, so sometimes a slightly lower gear is prudent.

when I did the big hill at Baldhu, I used low 2nd with diff lock on. I'm sure the landy would have gone up there happily in high 1st, with less wheelspin at the top, but stalling could have been disasterous, hence the choice of a lower gear.

no doubt ur right, buildin up experience, gettin a feel for ya motor!!when i first got me landy i went on a quick greenlanin trip, was foookin mental!slidin all over place, tryinto keep the bow wave(?) ahead of ya when goin through a wee flooded part of th lane!remember usin low 2nd alot, especially when goin in places that i cudnt afford to stall it....ahh soo much to learn, once this recessions over i rekon i'l get out there.that baldhu looks like a hella challenge!!christ!

High range 1st is roughly equivelent to low range 3rd. This puts low 5th around high 3rd, and good for about 40 mph, so even when looking for the highest possible gear, most off roading can be done in low range.

I agree! Generally when offroad I am always in Low range so as I have got the power if needed. Also no need to go above 40mph when off road as can get a little dangerous if you spin!!

I tend to keep the diff locked 90% of the time when offroading. Sometimes it can be too late to engage when you realise your wheels are spinning. Best off being prepared for whatever is comming (IMO)!

One thing to note though, whatever your driving style. Is to never keep the difflock engaged once you are back on tarmac (or any other surface that will not allow your wheels to slip!)

churs for th 'elp!rekon theres gorra b a couple easy lanes round me i can go n practise

i got hold of a dvd by david bowyer on off road driving....and went from there...ive been driving offroad now for about a year and im allways learning....

im allways carefull offroad as not to get into any situation where i may get stuck or cause damage to my truck.....also be aware of the gungho style of some drivers..... dont try and copy em.....

just remember,,,if you are not sure, dont drive it!!!!

I wouldnt go that far!!

At the end of the day if a terrain is new to you then you dont always know what to expect. That dosnt mean you shouldnt have a go! As for never gettiung stuck and never bending your truck....... Thats when your having the most fun! If you never get stuck then you never learn to get unstuck!! If you never bend it then you aint using it right!!

Only my gungho opinion!! ;)

Double agreed, it's so different from what you read, but make sure yuv got the kit to get back out, you aint gona wish it out.

I only ever use Difflock If I think it's going to be necessary after all it only takes a split second to flick the lever over and then back agian when your past the slippery section. It isn't like engaging Low or high range. Where you need to be stationary or moving very very slowly. Difflock can be engaged at any speed and in any gear. Just make sure your wheels aren't slipping when you flick the lever over.

This is very true. However, being an argumentstive git.....

If you are a beginner then knowing when are going to need difflock might not be so obvious. My point would be better to use it if you are unsure. Better to have the traction to drive you through the **** rather than using it to try and get out once you are stuck.
