I'm planning to buy a used SUV in the very near future. I'd narrowed
it down to an early 90's 4runner. When looking around, though, I
noticed one or 2 1990 Landcruisers in the same price range. Looking
for some experienced opinions on which would better suit my needs.
This rig will be used as a daily driver on a 15-minute commute, no
serious off-roading, occasional ice and snow and some light towing.
I'm pretty sure the 4runner fits well but I'm attracted to the
"classic" nature of the LC and wondering if it would be an equal
alternative. I'm mainly thinking in terms of gas mileage, reliability
and cost of maintenance. Secondarily, interior space and general
usability.

TIA,

Clark

Go with the Toyo, hands down. LCs are known to be expensive to maintain,
undependable, and not quite as refined.

Umm.. They're both "Toyos". Do you mean LandRover?
I have an '86 FJ60 Landcruiser. Just had my first breakdown at 270K
miles. Pretty good I'd say. I had to cough up $725 to fix it.

To answer the original question, either one of these vehicles is
overkill for your needs. Save the enviroment and get a more fuel
efficient vehicle. If you're worried about ice get some studs or siped
tires.

I have to agree, if ya don't really need an SUV why buy one?

not because it hurts the environment (because there really is an
environmental cost that many people do not think about), but I say
don't but one because of a dollars and sense arguement (an SUV costs
more to operate, insure and buy).

what's the use of getting a big old vehicle if you are just using it
to go drive around town, ya can do the same thing in a regular car....

having said that, given the choice between a 4runner, a land cruiser
and a range rover of about 1990 or there abouts I'd eliminate the
range rover because they are more expensive to work on (at least where
I live and I guess that applies nation wide), the sheet metal on range
rovers is much thicker than the toyotas of the same era (which makes
it better if ya want to pound out dents), but from what I have seen
british cars have a few reliability issues as compaired to the jap
cars.

The only british car I'd consider is the defender, real basic and
tough, but ride is harsh (but it does come with a manual trans which I
like myself).

I have an 80 series land cruiser, isn't perfect but it has a very good
trans (even if it is auto), and it can haul lots of stuff which is why
I picked it over the 4 runner of the same year (and the other reason
is the land criuiser has a solid axle or did the new 100 series made
after 1997 is made for the rich soccer mom/dad demographic), and since
the land cruiser is actually used off road in other parts of the world
ya can get parts to make a really comfortable off road rig.... but it
take $$$$$

the pre 92 land cruisers were underpowered, had an inline 6 of 4
liters, in 1993 LC had a new 4.5 liter engine (which does make a
difference), the nice thing about the LC is ya can find clean ones on
the used market because when they were new they were bought by older
people with $$$$$ who typically don't drive off road or abuse their
vehicles.

the 4 runner at least the early model 1st generation was really nice
because it came with a stick shift, and had a removeable hard top
shell (kind of heavy - had a friend who had one), and it was one tough
son of a gun, but since they are older chances are ya won't find one
that has not been beaten into the ground, that is because they were
sold to younger people (most likely) who drove cars harder.....

I'm with you on this. Buy a late 80s or early 90s Subaru wagon for ice
and light towing.

OK, let's follow the environmental argument. How much less does a
Subaru wagon affect the environment than a 4runner? Can't be much.
Besides, after 12 years of driving high-mpg cars on a long commute I
finally moved closer to work and I'd like to drive something that does
more than get from A to B. Not only that but if you compare Subaru vs
Toyota on reliability I think you go with the Toy.

Second, I really don't see myself pulling a trailer load of junk to
the dump behind a Subaru wagon.

I don't have time to look up the mpg for comparison but ("can't be
much" X # of people who think similarly) = very much difference in
burned fuel.
Don't take this wrong. I just think that people should buy a car for
it's intended use. My Landcruiser sucks gas but I live in the
mountains. I just use it for bad snow conditions and rough road
camping trips. I drive my Focus for everything else. I wish they
offered the car selection in the US, that they do in Europe. Instead
of my Focus, I'd have a cool little hot rod, high torque diesel w/
GREAT gas mileage.

Or maybe you could even do that and keep a Focus! :)

too bad it's not offered in the US.

Shame - I hope diesels catch on over there one day.

there are so many variables in any arguement esp. an environmental
one.

but for sake of arguement lets look at a station wagon vs truck, no
matter how ya look at it the truck will get worst mileage lets say 5
miles per gal less (which is not an unreasonable assumption).

over the course of a year say a truck like a 4 runner gets 18 MPG, if
ya drive 10,000 miles that is 555.55 gals of gas.

in a wagon that gets 23 mpg, if ya drive 10,000 miles that means ya
burn 434.78 gals of gas.

ya can play with an on line calculator to figure out the carbon load:

http://www.infinitepower.org/calc_carbon.htm

as ya see small differences do add up.....

then there are costs of pollution like health care costs, that ya have
to some how figure in, then ya consider that insurance on a truck is
going to be higher than a wagon (at least that was what I found out
when I looked at insuring a truck and wagon of equal value), blab,
blab, blab....

bottom line IMHO is get the right vehicle for the job, just don't
blindly buy a truck or SUV cause ya think its cooler than a wagon (too
many people have been sold a load of junk cause it was marketed in an
appealing way).

Huh???? Aren't diesel particulates one of the worst kinds of pollution?
