Hi firstly sorry for the title but it's the only way to describe this landrover. Rite not knowing the name I'll describe it. It's rectangular in shape and sits of the ground about 3 ft on massive wheels which on the front ones have what I can only describe as gripper rings attached for use as a step to climb into it, it has a canvas rear roof top with the rest of the body metal with loads of drop down panels etc. It has a monster winch fitted on the n/s mid chassis which is driven off the gearbox, it is powered by a v8 petrol. And has levers on the dash for high/low and also winch. Sure someone will know it now, I have pics but dunno how to put them on.
Rite now that I've described it I'll explain my reasoning for putting it on here, today I collected this from a customer for an mot I was surprised to see this as the lady just said on the phone it was a land rover but hayho. On driving to the mot garage after about 5 mile it started loosing power so I had to pullover and holding down the throttle it's popped and banged with flames out the exhaust then cut out, luckily it started and drove no bother to the garage where I switched it off. Five mins later wouldn't start at all checked fuel line (loads of fuel) also seamed to spark. Ended up flattening battery so put a booster on fired up first turn. Motd it then it stopped again messed about for ages appeared not to have a gap in the points so did a bit adjusting still nothing then turned the key and it went but on driving home really struggled to even make it back missing and popping just wondering if hopefully anyone can shed a bit light on this. There is quite a lot of side to side movement in the distributer shaft and i was just thinking this there now as could be causing it to be loosing the points gap. The customer knows nothing about this problem and has recently bought it. Thanks for reading and Any help welcomed. Darren.

sounds like forward control lr ,dizzys worn and presumably the rest of ignition system ,it is a basic v8 but may have std ignition system or 24volt system ,ffr suppressed system etc Redirect Notice there are earlier type with more pronouced bonnet

Either the distributor is worn, or sticking or the return springs are streched or broken....took me ages to figure that one out for myself...not sure about the v8 ones but the 4pot ones come apart easily enough to check and put back together in 20 minutes.

does this have twin carbs?it could be the rubber diaphrams in the top of carbs,or even chocked jets.what year is it?i had similar problems with an sd1,if they are thinking of selling it let me know

Thanks for your info guys found out today it is a 101. as for the dizzy the movement its got is when twisting clockwise/anticlockwise dont know if this is meant to do this though and be in the same position when running. it started up sweet as a nut this morning but i still pulled the cap off and checked the points etc which have been replaced recently. when turning it over with the cap off you can see the spark between the points which i couldnt see yesterday. but yesterday when putting a screwdriver down to open the points to check for a spark it was sparking at the points mounting screw not the points them selves. also the pots in the carbs didnt feel like they had much suction on them so ive added a bit 3 in 1 oil untill they felt right. It is a 12 volt system thats in it. what is it that sticks in the dizzy and what are the springs that wear?

The rotary movement will be the advance/retard, sparking across the points can mean a buggered condensor, poking around the dizzy with a screwdriver may not be a useful diagnostic - use something insulating.

I was just trying to mimic the points opening and closing with the screwdriver to see if they sparked with the ignition on but got spark between the screwdriver and the actual dizzy. i had thought of the coil breaking down possiblly when hot but wasnt to sure of the dodgey sparking with the screwdriver. the points/condesor look new but coil, cap and leads look ancient like.

i would ,theres probably a few things need a service but start with ignition system ,check timing with strobe if possible, clean breathers on rocker covers

Just an update.replaced coil, dizzy cap, plugs, rotor arm, points and leads today and what a difference it made by the way, the difference was like night and day it was a flying machine and never missed a beat on a run out I even did the school run in it lol my little lad was well impressed when he came out and that was in the carpark he's been asking me since last week to pick him up so all his mates could see it. Thanks for all your help. Darren.
