Right folks,

Old Series 3 laid up as a museum piece for a while, I received, smokey when running always. I tried filters, timing, fuel pump timing, butterfly valve, prayers. Overall it was running ok with power but just smoky as soon as the revs went up. I did have a thread on here but cant find it anymore.

I have sorted out timing as this was way off and still smokes and rotating the fuel pump didn't change much so on a punt I replaced 4 injectors thinking they would have sat idle for many years and would be the best part of 30 years old anyway.

Well I say replaced I just managed to get number 4 out this morning after much persuasion... for once of the moral kind. The sticker was oddly #4 (nearest to the front bulkhead) and its oily, considerably so and its the only one which is.

I assume this could be the source of my problems ?

Head off ? If so can I do that with the engine in place ? and what is the likely cause ? seal/valve ? something simple ?

I assume the last chap found similar as when he sold it I noticed the bolt was missing from the oil return pipe behind this injector with the bolt with a hole in it. I assume I am grasping at straws for thinking this may have flooded the injector area.

If it has stood and not been driven in anger for a while it really needs a good long run to clear any residual oil. Be sure to replace the banjo bolt on the oil feed .

If the spill pipe is blocked off that will be your problem get the injector serviced and fit a spill pipe.

The Spill pipes seem fine, and they carry Diesel not oil ? How does oil get to where the injector is.The bolt which was missing is best shown in this picture and carries oil but is now replaced.

I have a set of 4 new injectors so if its something old which will clear I am happy to fit but I am still not comfortable in understanding how oil was in there, PISTON = Fuel+AIR... no oil/water.

I was reviewing this and thinking.. perhaps a head gasket would be worth a shot before I put the new injectors in. Especially as I have done everything else.

I'd do a compression test before pulling it apart .
Fit the new injectors and see how she is then do a compression test.
You might have a bust ring for example, a head gasket change won't fix that.

I hadn't thought of that to be honest good call, I have the kit already from the Defender.

Sorry misunderstood your post.

Hmmm discovered this when trying to fish out #4 washer (which doesn't appear to be there) this definitely came from below the injector.

Assume this is the smaller steel washer or whats left of it.

that pipe should be pouring oil out as you turn engine over its the oil fed for head

a washer like that would mean that injector needs a new nozzle or replacing

BUUUUUUGGGGGER !

4 nice new injectors, all primed and ready to turn her over... could this be the cause of my smoke issues..

So I get it all back together and for some reason the key wont turn in the barrel any ideas ? It was fine when I stopped it.. Key wouldn't have been turned for many months but it didn't even begin to turn. The stalk which I think is no longer used (old pull stop I guess) is stuck out and wont push back in.

Is it a later series three with steering lock type of switch ? Simple enough to remove and start with a screwdriver in the switch slot then oil/check the lock.
