greetings. am new to forum. just traded in my man for a 94 defender 3 months ago. just as much grief but lots more fun. i have a fine spray of oil from my dipstick - i changed the little rubber seal and still have the problem. am also having trouble starting the engine -don't know if related. runs fine once it's started. my landy is a defender 90 with a 2.5 diesel engine

Welcome to the forum.:welcome2:

Not sure about the oil spray, but when you try to start and it doesn't what kind of noise does it make?

Hello and welcome.......

My thoughts; compression/blow back? possible head gasket? But I know next to b***er all, so some highly knowledgeable types will be along shortly........

I take it take your "2.5 diesel in your '94 Def", is a 300tdi, not a a 200tdi or 2.5 n/a? It may make a difference to the answer you get, or again it may not. :)

i also thought blowback. my engine is a 12j. when i crank the engine it just sounds like the battery is dying - but it's not the battery - then, all of a sudden it fires up

piston rings worn causing pressure in the sump forcing the oil out of the dipstick, although could just be a blocked breather, don't panic just yet.LEE

Worn engine I would say, if it's a 2.5NA I would imagine it has a few miles on the clock.

Low compression due to worn/broken rings, worn bore which is causing blow back pressurising the crankcase and spraying it out the dip stick tube.

Are your glow plugs working, this engine really needs them for a cold or even cool start. Do you touch the throttle when you start the engine? Doing so will make it harder to start, also if the idle is set on the throttle lever that will cause issues (same as having foot on throttle really) or if the pedal is tensioned too much again it pulls on the throttle, it wants to be hard against the home point (a screw which is used for adjusting when the pump is being calibrated).

The oil filler cap with the pipe on it, take it off, and clean out the mesh/gauze with kero or petrol. Refit it and see how it does, I don't think it will make much of a difference but if it is totaly blocked it could account for the oil spray if it isn't compression issues and is glows.

thanks guys. afraid it's beyond my capabilities - will have to take it in to my landy specialist in Managua. good thing labor is cheap here. just finished fixing my front differential. i had been warned that i was going to spend a small fortune and lots of time at the shop with a landy - wish i didn't like the car so much. i don't think i can ever go back to driving anything else.
