Hi,
ive got a s3 with a 200 di(no turbo) fitted, ive had no bother with it, the performance is ok and it starts on the button. Today i had to do a bit of road burning to pick up a friends brocken disco, when we got back i parked up and was mucking around in the cab with the engine ticking over when i noticed trhe oil light was flickering, if i picked up the revs a little the light went out. I let it stand for a about ten mins, started it up and everything was fine. I have plenty oil in and it and that and the filter were changed about 6 months ago( 10/40 semi synthetic).
My landy expert( it was his sisters car we went to pick up) mentioned a rear cam bearing problem but told me not to worry, he has a 200 disco that does the same thing and has done for years now.
Anyone got any ideas ?

if cam bearings gone they dont run for years get pressure tested with guage in oil pressure switch hole, and its more likely front if cam as it gets loading from timing belt,also feed for head comes from there ,could be poor switch ,or if low when warm crank bearings ,oil squirts ,cam bearings ,pump and or relief valve
 
You really want good old fashioned mineral oil in the motor.
Just my opinion, old motors old style oil.

Well to be honest i wasnt sure what to use, i used to work in a car parts shop, so i get a good price on all my parts so i thought semi synth would be better. I have a early mx5 and used a fully synth in that but didnt like the way the oil pressure dropped when it was warm, i asked the valvoline rep and he told me that because synthetic oil was thin the pressure would be lower but it had better lubrication property,s(?). I think i,ll try mineral in there tommorro aswell,

I remember years ago i had a 97 tdi auto, we got full syn oil for the trucks in at work and i thought well its got to be better surely?, so in it went , bugger me it drank it like a fish unreal, two weeks later back to the std mineral oil and all was well again, since then ive always used decent mineral oil in my tdis and not had any problems.
I did buy a 200tdi disco once that the po had snapped the crank as the cam bearing had moved and lost oil pressure.

shpd I use e5 or e7. Not branded silly bollix.

Even in our V8's we have always used Turbo diesel oil and slick 50 much higher temp range used to be Unipart SHPD Turbo D oil but alas no longer.

When racing Spitfiremk1uk his V8 racer got seriously hot think he punctured the rad mid lap. It started getting slower and slower changed down all the gears reight doen to to 1st low and it finally seized up. Parked it up towed it back to the pits after the event it only fired up and ran somthing that took that abuse and still survived albeit not as nice as it once did but I was sold on the combo
 
P.s Change your pressure switch or ideally check what pressure your getting. I have seen 3 in the last month that the switch has been faulty. After removal the switch was dissasembled and inspected the diaphram on all of them was punctured giving a false reading.
 
well i changed the oil from 10/40 semi synthetic to 15/40 mineral and everything seems ok, do now notice a bit of blue smoke when starting on a morning and the odd puff now and then but i can handle that

hi iv got the same problem id brought mine for spare or repairs so never drove it, rebuilt it and iv put 10/40 semi in it and when it warms up i get the oil light on at idle, so for now then ill go for changing the switch and an oil change to 15/40 mineral if that dosent work i no its gonna engine apart thanks
