Hi folks sorry if this has already been covered somewhere. I am new to this site in fact I am new to landys, just bought a series 2a tax exempt and cant stop smiling:) however this morning I was going along the a30 when the oil pressure light came on and stayed on. i noticed if i revved up it went dimmer but just lit up again when I drove at normal speed. i checked the obvious, lots of oil and it wasn,t ****ing out everywhere. Any ideas please:(
 
sounds like you got a tired n worn engine there - maybe doing the rings would elp

get yerself a compression tester

Same thing just before mine let go big time. Any loss of power?
 
It could be the wire from the sensor to the oil pressure warning light - if the insulation has been damaged and the cable is touching metal then the light would stay on. Try pulling the electrical connector off the sensor and turn on the ignition. If the light is still on then you have found the problem.

The worst case scenario is worn crankshaft and bearnings, but low oil pressure could be caused by a worn oil pump, blocked oil filter or faulty pressure relief valve. If the problem is not electrical you should drop the sump and undo some of the big end and main bearing caps to look at the bearings.

What you on about Sean? Worn piston rings have no effect on oil pressure.

It would be a very bad idea to continue driving it until you have solved the problem.
 
You scare the **** out of me. just passed the MOT last week. ok thanx for all your advice, will check the electrics first.
 
ok oil pressure wire disconnected and light went out so not short then. should I just replace the sensor or the whole filter thingy???
 
Sorry to scare you mate! It's only the engine that's at risk of seizing up and ruining your crankshaft, not your personal safety. If it were me I would order a new sensor and a new oil filter element and then fit the sensor first and see if the problem goes away. If you fit them both at the same time and the problem goes away you won't know what the problem was. It shouldn't be the filter causing the problem because I think there is a bypass valve which comes into play if the filter becomes blocked - but that may be jammed.

You have not mentioned any heavy knocking noises from the engine which is a good sign. If the engine is worn out, then you could probably get a second hand 2 1/4 petrol engine for about £50.
 
thanx for the sanity back. this landy is my world at the minute, I dream about them!!! However latest is got a new sensor wacked it in and the light has gone off. Thanx to geoff my landy man. thinking long term though (by the way its diesel) what a bout a prima perkins? is it cheaper than an overdrive? the engine i got now seems ok just clunks a bit on gear change. but as I said before I am new to all this landy stuff and really trying to think long term. This landy is for life not just for xmass.
 
I'd say: If it ain't broke don't fix it. I don't know about the Prima engine, but I did a Transit engine conversion and it was a lot of work to get it to fit and make everything work properly. I am pleased with the result though, and it's nice to have something a bit different.
 
On the same note... The oil pressure in my old V8 lump drops to around 20 at tickle over. Is this anything to worry about???
