idiot light comes on in morning then after driving for about 5 min goes out.
Oil level is normal.

How do I test the sensor? Should I just install a mechanical gauge?

What pressure is within spec if I attempt to attach a pressure gauge to test
oil pump?

Thanks.
Jack

The people in alt.fan.landrover will have the answer for you.

ISTR that the light flickering at tickover is ok, but it should go out
when the revs rise. Try googling alt.fan.landrover and you'll
probably find the answer about what the pressure should be. I think
they can also suffer from a sticky pressure relief valve.

A pressure gauge is highly recommended.
It's normally low - from memory I think it's about 30 or 40 lbs/sq-inch
on rev.

If you've got the correct grade of oil and there's no rumbling or
knocking from the engine then suspect the pressure switch first. I've
known at least two people in my small circle of Land Rover friends who
have spent ages trying to cure low oil pressure only to realise the
pressure switch was faulty.

Change the oil pressure switch first. Might be faulty.
If there is an actual problem with oli pressure, you have probably ruined
the engine by now !

So you drove for 5 minutes with the oil light showing?

Now I see why its called the idiot light!

yea yea yea....not exactly...I left out all the boring stuff...but here ya
go

at first I pulled right over and stopped the engine
checked the oil...it was ok..scratched head
started engine and waited for trouble...couple of minutes...nothing out of
the ordinary.
jumped in car started to drive...no light.
next morning....see steps above...for three days...
I'm suspecting the switch is bad. but thanks for the input of lack there of,
SimonJ.

Nothing out of the ordinary. I need to acquire a gauge for a better
understanding. Thanks.
