Oil leaks on Freelander 2 2012 plate

Hi, I have a freelander 2 2012 with 80000 miles on the clock.
It went in for an oil leak and diagnostics shown multiple oil leaks costing £4800 to fix!!!
they have said the turbocharger has a massive leak which they suspect is going into the EGR valve and the EGR cooler.
also noted that the rear main crank oil seal is also leaking and recommends replacing all of these components in order to eliminate the oil leaks.
parts required- Turbocharger, EGR valve, EGR cooler and rear crankshaft seal.
the price includes the labour and said they may have to have it for a week.
Does this seem excessive regarding the price? it has oil on the driveway and just small drips.
it is a really tidy car and worry that we wont get our money back on it when we come to sell it.

Yes, ignore the BS you've been given.
They're clearly after making some money, and see you as a cash cow.

The most likely place for this engine to loose oil, is at the top where the intake pipe that crosses the engine and joins the plastic pipe which feeds the turbo.
This is simply a bad design of this hose connection, and no real cause for concern. It doesn't need a turbo, or EGR valve, it's just a small occasionally drip of oil from the breather system, which slowly finds its way over the EGR valve and onto the turbo.

There's plenty of information on various cures, but as oil loss is only minor, it's more an irradiation than anything else.

Crank seals can leak, but at 80k, this is unlikely. Mine are still oil tight at 120k, and they'll stay that way for a long time yet.

Yes. At least Dick Turpin had the decency to wear a mask.
I'd take to someone that isn't going to try to fleece you, or start doing your own maintenance, as it's not that difficult.

thanks for this info, my hubby did think that also and we were ready to part ex it.
he can put his hand to anything so any idea what he can do to try and stop the oil leak, what parts etc would we need to look at getting.
he's off work now until next week so could try and sort it in this time before he goes off working away again?

any advice appreciated.

Here's a picture of my 2008 TD4. I've put a red ring around the joint that leaks.

The standard fix is to clean that joint properly, and make sure the hose clip is tight enough, but not so tight it distorts the plastic.
It's also possible to use a very thin smear of silicone sealer on the bottom half of the joint, which helps keep the oil in the pipe, where it can be fed to the engine and burnt.

Don't do that, as the Freelander 2 is currently going up in value, and you'll only get 50-60% of its private sale value as a trade in.

they also said the turbo could go at anytime so that was a worry.

If a land rover stops leaking, check it has not run out of oil. Land Rover built a oil absorber into the sump guard which suggests they could not stop it. Is it getting through a lot of oil?

Whoever told you that was talking complete and utter rubbish.
The turbo is generally good for well over 120k miles, mine is the original and still perfect, except for the oil staining on the outside, from the pipe that dripped until I got it, which has absolutely no effect on its function or life.

Just keep using the vehicle, and have it serviced on time, and don't fall for any rubbish from people hoping to make a quick buck.

All turbos are in the process of failing from the moment they are made. Just how late do you leave it before changing it to be on the safe side? Sounds like they would have you change it as often as you can afford.
