Filling the washer bottle up and noticed a puddle (small) of oil at bottom of engine. Can't have been leaking too long cos not much evidence of it on drive. Couple of pics here if anyone can point me in the right direction. Leak seems to come from drivers side below/behind pulley belts. Mad Hat Man don't tell me its HGF if its not true.

difficult to tell where its leaking from with those pics, you'll need to take the undertray off to get a better look

Wot Engine yu got rock. I cant see why yu wud think I wud say its HGF, oil leak aint the usual first sign (apart from the "T" series - not a hippoo). Think its more likely to be a camshaft seal as a stab in the dark, but its almost impossible to tell from ya info supplied.
Sorry for lack of info. 1.8 petrol on a 51 plate. I know I don't post as regular as some, but since I've been backing the good points (ironic or what) about the 1.8 for a while I didn't think I'd need to give all the info again. Just shows how much notice is taken of what you post.

Your oil leak looks like its been going for some time.
Easiest way to check without getting your hands dirty - First look under engine at dipstick housing gasket, rear drivers side, they seem to be prone to leaks. next check sump and even sump drain plug. Failing that you will have to remove camshaft cover number of 8mm bolts to see if it is a cam oil seal as MHM mentioned (note each position of bolt when you remove them).

I spose once yu get some idea of where it is leaking from, If it aint spread all over the engine, yu could always get the engine steam cleaned and then check regularly for first signs of it coming back.

Thanks LR1796 will have a look around dipstick area when I can get to see it in daylight again (12 hour shifts) which will be weekend now. Only looking for some pointers like you gave me to figure out if its a raid on the piggy bank. Being totally useless at the mechanical side this is just to give info to guy that does my work. Only thing done lately was timing belt replaced during service. One question though what would be effect of too much oil in engine?

If your belt was done recently then it could have been dealer's fault for not noticing leak. Name and shame them if they dont oblige to have a look for you.
I recently repaired hg on 1.8, it had a few minor leaks from the sump and cam carrier to cylinder head. These are repaired by Comma gasket seal (red type). The K-series is a fairly easy engine to work at, if special tools cant be found for cam locking etc, then they can be easily made out of bits of metal bar.

Thanks for the info guys. Will get in touch with mechanic and tell him leak developed after service / replacing timing belt. The guy works for himself and is generally very good and doesn't have a mask on when giving you his account, so if its anything to do with his work I reckon he'll come good for it. Whatever the outcome I'll keep you posted... Rock

Do wot flippy hat man says, clean away oil as best ya can, run motor and have a good visual, common problems are sump seal [should fit a new one every time its orft]oil filter gasket rubber , , ,then its pipes and engine seals. . . .best oh luck. . .
