took the starter off me landie thought the brushes were stuck turns out it was full of oil no idea were this oil has come from the engine is a 2 litter diesel
can anyone please help

Can only really come from the bell housing, I would have thought. Unless you have a cascade of oil from above.

Assuming its engine oil, is any oil dripping from the bottom of the bell housing? If so , probably rear crank seal.

never seen any oil from the base of bell housing can oil get in the starter motor from the gear ring

Dunno, there's no oil on the ring gear.
If the oil is getting in along the bendix, the only source is the gear box or rear seal.
The wading plug question is a good one, that might explain why nothing drip. (although if the bell housing was filling up, you might expect clutch problems as well)

Question - is this something recent or a case of "haven't dismounted the starter in years and it's crappy inside"?

If the latter I'd clean it out and put it back on. Could well be some well-meaning but clueless owner previous to you took to over-oiling the bushings and just went nuts on it.

If the former, i'd be more likely to suspect something dripping in from above or around rather than from the bellhousing if the inside of the housing isn't dripping with oil. WIth the 2-liter Diesel, though, you do have a path from the bellhousing as opposed to a petrol where the starter drive is not inside the starter but on the shaft outside the housing.
