A few minor questions relating to changing of the filter element for the bowl type filter on a 2.25 Diesel.

1) I take it that the smaller rubber washer underneath the head of the centre bolt is not intended to be replaced?

2) The gaskets to seal between the filter body and engine block that you can buy have smaller holes than the filter body. Should I cut these out to the size of the holes on the filter body as not to restrict the flow?

3) Should I prime the filter by filling it with engine oil before refitting? Is this necessary?

4) Is it worth smearing some hermetite red on the seals before reassembling?

5) Before I do any of this, Is it worth spending the money on a spin-on filter conversion and not bothering with the element type?

Thanks for any info.

My filters come with the little and big washer / seal but I suppose you can reuse the one you have if it looks ok. I just smear a little grease on the seals - it helps the big one stick in the groove before offering up the housing. I don't bother filling the filter, can't imaging a cup full in there would make much difference and I'd probably end up lubricating my arm pit! I just start up but keep revs at tickover. I've often thought about the spin on type but i like to keep it all original. Rocky Mountain do one with a tap already in it for a take off for a pressure gauge, which would make a nice addition for peace of mind.

1 it is replaceable preferably each time you do the filter but you could manage without a time or so
2 usually the holes are larger ,but should be the same as block at least
3 it will leak all over you ,it doesnt really matter
4 just use a little oil and twist filter body when bolt is nipped to ensure it seats well
5 no , canister filter is now old hat and modern cars have returned to paper element replacement as series

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to have a look at Billing next weekend. A spin-on filter would make things much easier.
