chaps,
I recently as you know re-timed my distributor skew gear which required removal of oil filter housing.

I removed from block and cleaned old gasket off engine block, cleaned face of oil filter housing and put back.

The ghastly beast is dripping oil all over my works car park from the offending joint!

I used a proper gasket but it looks like it may be leaking down the bolt threads!?

Do you chaps use an rtv silicon or blue hyloma on this gasket face or thread bolts?

Did you remove all of the old oil filter gasket rubber ring before fitting your new filter, and make sure that the new rubber ring was properly seated?

just checked and it looks more to be from filter Oring now not the block, I'll remove whole assembly again and report back chaps

I bought a filter housing from a 2.5 NA engine. I plan to fit this onto the block when it comes to reassembling my S3.

The mounting holes are exactly the same, but you can use a spin-on filter. This saves a lot of hassle with the paper filters, and means less places to leak from.

I had a nightmare getting my filter cover on after putting in a new filter my first time. Ended up binning the rubber O ring and just using instant gasket, works well with no leaks. Smear a bit of oil on first (although it will probably be caked in it anyway!) so it comes off easily when you want it to.

Be warned, they are a right pain to track down.

I asked countless sellers at both Billing and Peterborough. For the few that even knew what I was talking about, none of them had one. In the end, I had to get someone to find one back at their workshop and post it to me.
