hi just serviced my td5 and i found a small drip coming from between the bellhousing and engine.on the bottom of the bellhousing nearest the block thier is a plug with a square inset ,if i remove this will this drain out any oil residue in the bellhousing which has collected over time as it doesnt say on the cd rom what this plug is for any help or suggestions, i know that the oil is probably from the crank oil seal but i will have to keep an eye on my oil levels for now just want to sort the leek first cheers gary

if its engine oil it is your cam cover gasket leaking oil down the back of your engine, this happens alot. dont worry about it bein your crank seal they never leak on td5's(crosses fingers)

if you slacken bolts off rear engine cover you will feel the oil coming from rear of cam cover :)

Hi checked cam cover and rear of block it looks very dry, when im under car with engine running at the very bottom of the belhousing thier is a small hole probably a breather or to let fluid drip out off this is where my drip is coming from, every time i take the car out for a run with the bottom wiped clean it comes back dripping with oil(50p size drip on my drive) could it be coming from the gear box running forward or will it be the crank shaft oil seal ,(the car has done 96k on a 2001 plate)what do you guys think?cheers gary

Dunno about the Td5, but if it's the same as the 19J engine I would suspect the flywheel housing to block joint. If oil comes out of the drain hole when you take the wading plug out I would also suspect the crankshaft oilseal. the plug is to stop water ingress when wading and should be left of under normal conditions just in case the clutch gets contaminated with oil if the seal leaks.

if it was the gear box input seal it would be leaking between bellhousing and gearbox,

i have never seen a rear crankshaft seal leak on a TD5 so my money is still on oil leaking out of rear of cam cover gasket, but theres allways a 1st time i suppose,

but before you go down that route i would renew the sump gasket 1st just incase its that leaking into bell housing

Thats a thought, sump gasket first then.

Regards WP.

hi thanks for all the replys i had forgot that the back of the sump is probably in the bellhousing i will explore that route first thanks gary.
