hi im doing an oil change on a farmers 300 tdi defender tommorow that has done over 160000 miles but i dont think its had a service very often can any body recomend an grade of oil to use. also i need to change the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder while im there.is this much of a job on a defender ive done one on a discovery is it harder or not

15/40 turbo gold. master cylinder remove plate on top undo six bolts disconnect pipes make sure you cover the ports with a cloth because you have to press the pedal and turn it 90 degrees to get it out when you press the pedal if not covered you'll shoot fluid everywhere

Injun oil in the injun, ATF in the gearbox, EP 90 in the Transfer box. Slave cylinder is a doddle I've not done a master cylinder but don't reckon it'll be too difficult, the hard part is bleeding the system it can be a right pain in the arse.

i changed my clutch master not long ago. pretty simple nut and bolt job. just drain all fluid from underneath on bleed valve. 6 bolts in footwell surrounding pedal. undo, pull out pedal box, unbolt it all and replace parts. its not that simple but thats the jist of it.
bleeding isnt too bad. its a two man job. one underneath on the bleed valve and one pumping the clutch. pump it until u get fluid thru and apparent no air and close valve. then see how the pedal feels for pressure. make sure u get the adjustment right on the cylinder.
oh and i heard some people use MTF in gearbox as it gives longer life?

true ATF is specified in manuals and land rover suggest that. however u can use either, meaning one of the other. u cannot mix the two and if u r changing from one to the other then u must make sure that old oil is properly drained, i.e left overnight and ideally flushed thru with some new oil.

The thinner oil also helps stop the baulk rings on the synchros' sticking and makes gear changing easier. Being Automatic Transmission Fluid it can stand the same extreme pressures that EP (Extreme Pressure) oils can.

LR tech bulletin back in 1997 stated that MTF94 (made by Texaco) should be used in R380 gearboxes and can be retrofitted (their word) to LT77's. Amazingly enough this is the oil for the PG1 gearbox fitted to flodas. Also used by Honda and Hyundai if you have trouble getting some. I find the gearchange better and there is less wear, bits on the magnetic plug etc.
Here in SA MTF94 is now hard to get so we use Castrol VMX in the workshop. It says it is an 80 grade but it is a LOT thinner than 80w90 EP. Maybe a bit thicker than MTF.
I am thinking of switching to Castrol Transmax Z (not R or M). This is a Dexron III fully synthetic and gives good changes in manual boxes and never needs to be changed, although it is pricey in the first place.
