Hi all my friends 52 reg freelancer is burning a lot of oil. When I removed the inter cooler pipes and revved the engine it blew oil everywhere. I assume the turbo is shot. What is the easiest way to replace the turbo? Also is there anything else that could cause the same problem?? Thanks for reading

If it is a TD4 engine, breather a known problem and swap for BMW version, failing that it will be turbo and you need to make sure it does not run away.

pull the dipstick does it blow oil out running?

Not tried the dipstick out but removed the top cover and ran it and it fired oil out of 1 of the top cover bolt holes on the o/s of the engine. It went everywhere. Tried to remove the cam cover breather but the Allen key headed screws are rounded

Blowing oil out of that hole is what I would expect. That is not a fault.

I can only deduce that the pcv is blocked.

As said, with the engine idling pull out the dip-stick - there should be no pressure or oil coming up the pipe.

What you are calling the cam-cover breather is what BMW call an Oil Separator. LR never got the updated part.

Get the cyclone, vortex thingy from any BMW dealer.

Search for pcv, and you'll get the part number - come back if you can't find it - it costs £23 - I'm 99% sure that's your problem.

Singvogel.

One of mine had rounded off, I used a small chisel on the side of the head to loosen it off then used a pair of long nose pliers. You could also hammer the blade of a screwdriver into the bolts recess, as long as its a tight fit, then use a pair of mole grips or stillsons to unscrew it.

Thanks everyone for your help and advice, i replaced the breather with the BMW type, cleaned out the intercooler and everything is back to how it should be, i gave it back to my friend and they were delighted with it, thanks again everyone
