Hey I have just bought a 1990 Defender 110 CSW and have just been told by a garage that it most likely needs a new engine and several other costly repairs. Is it actually worth trying to repair or should I just cut my loses and try to find a better one. If I do change engine do I go for a 20 tdi or 300 tdi as it currently has a 2.5 TD.

Thanks for any advice given

Dom

Im not the olnly one then. My 1987 110SWs TD engine, has give up. Whats u gota do if ur gona change the engine urself (from the research ive done), is find a disco 200tdi and put it in. The exhaust down pipe is different and ull hav to buy one built specialy, and modify the radiator attachemnts.

Or u can get a 200tdi out of a defender and it should go strait in. Im fairly sure the 300tdi conversion is more complicated, and the Dicso 200tdi and defender 300tdi hav identical power torqe outputs, so why bother with the hastle.

Good Luck, im about 60% sure im about to be putting in a Disco 200Tdi.

Richard.

Depends what the other costly repairs are & how substantial. Chassis? Bulkhead? If so, prob' best to forget it & cut your losses.

If you did change the engine you're prob' going to be a lot better off with a 200, less elektrickery going on.

Why does the garage say it needs a new engine exactly?

They said its drawing oil into its air system and is just in very bad condition. The other problems are pretty much ball joints, a couple of new outriggers, starter motor, PAS belt, leaking steering box, steering UJs, steering damper bushes, rear bearing and I think thats about it. He did say that the chassis is in good order.

 NEVER!!!

From what i understand it my landys worth about £1000 with no engine, and about £3000 with a 200Tdi.

So if i can get a Dicso engine for £600 i will!

Are you planning to fit it yourself or get somone else to do it Dom? Unfortunatly Marcus has a point if u plan to spend £2200 having one fitted.

Rich.

I have no idea about engines and the such so I would probably need someone to do it for me. So it looks like I may be best of binning it then. Just out of curiosity what is the best place to try and find a 220 tdi

If your Landies worth a bag with no engine, it must have a very good chassis & bulkhead.............which was my point?

BUT if the chassis & bulkhead were shot to **** AND it had no engine all you'd have was a worthless pile of rust and some wires.

Yea, i got a good shassy and a OK bulk head, its worth saving. Especialy since the steering, brakes, suspension ect is all new.

Try ebay for engines but if somone else is gona do it for u, u come up with the cash and they will source one, then u hav somone to blame if it all goes wrong in a fiew months.

sorry to hear of your news. i am looking at getting a 2.5TD 110 . when you brought yours how did the engine sound / pull. did you think it needed work or did you just put it in for a service? i hope you dont mind me asking but i would be thankfull for any advice before i buy. cheers .

if the engine is shot on a 90/110 2.5na, then a 200tdi transplant is definately the way to go. see some peeps want 750 quid just for a 2.5na injun!
as long as the rest is ok.

just find a disco 200. cheap as chips with no mot. approx 500/1000 quid.

douginessex the engine sounded not to bad it does smoke a bit but the mechanic said that is normal then when he had a better look he said it had oil in the air system I don't think it is going to die too soon but he thinks its worth looking to change it.

Thank you for the help ormus.
