Odd H/L problem. Do i need a new gearbox?

Hi.
My 1972 Landy (43k on the clock) is acting strangely..

Ive lost Normal (2 wheel) High ratio. as if it's in neutral (even the handbrake (transmission brake) doesn't work while in Normal High ratio.

I have all gears in 4 wheel drive High ratio and it drives as normal like this.

i also have all gears in low ratio's..

I have tried pushing the red nob forward hard and it makes no difference although the fact that it works fine in High with the yellow nob down suggest the red one is in the right place..

im flummoxed.. is this something that can be fixed or is a replacement gearbox required.

This may sound a bit obvious and sorry if you have already tried it but did you check that there is enough tension in the yellow knob spring? Try pulling the yellow knob up when you push the red one back towards the bulkhead. If there is no tension then it won't spring out of 4WD. I had that problem recently when I put the gearboxes back together after a rebuild. Pooed myseflf thinking that I mucked something up until I realised what was going on.
 
Half shaft or diff. If the hand brake aint working you've got no drive to the rear then the fault is after the gearbox - if the propshaft hasn't fallen off (I think you'd notice that) and it's not making horrible noises from the rear axle it's probably a half shaft broke. They often go with little or no drama. There have been some threads on here recently about half shaft replacement.

tried the yellow nob just in case.. no difference.

half shaft sounds preferable to gearbox.

diffs... i was going to change these for Disco diffs any way, maybe i should do all at once?

anyway..

I can get it up on a ramp in a local garage after hours, but he wont help without charging so.., is there a way to test the rear half shaft to see if it is that? anything in particular to hit, pull, twist etc..

Yes. ill do that.

I have just got it on the flat, put it in h/r two wheel drive and applied the transmission break while it was ticking over.

the rear drive shaft is going around without the wheels moving.

this would suggest half shaft has been stripped or sheered, possibly the diff.

What i don't understand is this:

I can drive it in low ratio with the yellow nob up.. i don't have a choice, if i press it down it springs back up any way.

I always assumed it was in 2 wheel drive low ration and i could not get 4wd. this obviously isn't the case.

Is the low ration 4 wheel drive by default or am i missing something?
 
Yep, agree with all. If the prop is moving and the wheels not then half shaft is most likely to blame. Its an easy fix but can get to be a pain of the break is at the diff end and its burred. Getting the bit out can be a bugger.
A lot less drama than a gearbox replacement though.

Yes, it is the driver side half shaft break has broken off at the diff end and it burred so the bit isnt coming out with magnets etc.

I was going to swap the diffs with some from a Disco which i have at some point, so might as well have a go at it now now.

ill look out for a half shaft (unless the disco shaft will fit in which case i have one).

so ill start trying to work out how to loosen those 40 year old diff bolts :)

just an afterthought in case any one has done this before.

when changing a diff (from a disco to a lady), do i need to get a vernier caliper the disco diff before removing it so i can set it in the landy at the same measurement (assuming it needs setting.. something to do with a crushed washer.. :)

ill see if i can find a walk through also (just in case).

I have an 88 landy (1972) and a mate has a discovery i can take parts from.

I wanted to do this myself, but he says it would probably need verniers etc to set the diffs up after swapping.

to be honest i haven't changed a diff before (or even seen one with the cover off) so im at the mercy of my mates judgment or help i can get here.

i was hoping it was just a case of popping the shafts out and swapping them over.. but if it a lot more complicated so be it.. id still want to give it a go.

Unfortunatley my mate says there is nothing worse then taking over a job someone has already started so he wont let me do it without him (its his ramp) and he dosnt have time at the moment.

this is why i was hoping to find a walk through with Pics.

if its a rover diff they just swap no measuring or anything as long as its got 10 splines ,you only need to fit filler in rear case if yours dosent have one as disco diffs dont have filler in diff housing ,or fill with half shaft removed through stub axle with jack under axle to lift it on that side,front means either stripping wheel station to remove stub axle to pull half shafts or undoing 6x bolt on chrome ball to pull halfshafts out enough to swap diffs resealing chrome ball to axle with silicone so you dont have to undo brake flexis to pull shafts out enough to fit gasket ,but you can drive on rear changed diff in 2wd and do front later

hope this isnt a dumb questions, but does this mean i dont have to remove the diffs from the axle housings at all? just swap the whole lump over?

Also. as luck should have it, my mate has a few disco's in bits and also a really old classic RR in bits.

is there a "best donor" for this, i assume the older the better?

still have to wait till order a half shaft (i assume they are different from disco half shafts).

i think the part number is frc1644 (10/24 spline), but an advert states 1980 onward and im a 72?

ill get you number tomorrow only salisbury diffs need striping from casing ,disco would be best option 10 spline only ,early rr had oil filler in diff housing so where popular for series that didnt have filler in rear case ,any 10 spline diff defender rr disco will be allright straight bolt in fit
 
think i've found it, this landy seems to have a lot of 2a bits when i look for spares, it was manufactured 1970. registered 72.
it was untouched when i got it. all original and rusty and full of farm hay, poo etc.

paddockspares have the following at £12 +vat + p&p which looks like the right one.. but i will wait for your number just to be sure. many thanks for all this, ill get you a few pints should i see you at a rally / campsite etc.

Rear Halfshaft - RH - all S11/11A SWB to 80/81 - 10spline
 
Ok. got this donor car on the ramp.
the rear flange is different which could be a pain (hopefully this doesnt mean its the wrong diff type), there's a lock hut on the wheel and no spanner for it.
still trying to find a way to get it off with brute force.

thanks for the number by the way, i wont order untill ive seen the state of the others.
