I have read elsewhere on this section of the forum that "pre 2012 Defenders" can be stolen by re coding a key using the OBD port.

Can this be done on the TD5 or does it refer to tdci only?

Only l need to know if it's worth making the connector secure on my TD5!
 
No....easily reversible. But somebody trying to steal the vehicle will be delayed.

true, I did have a quick look online. Looks like you can get ODB locks but not for Defenders, that IF they can even be nicked that way. Based of my knowledge with the Nanocom it won't connect to the ECU unless the engine is running. I don't think the Nanocom even powers up if you plug it in while the engine is off.

RRs and the like are different as they have multiple ECUs controlling multiple things which are often always 'live' there was a spate of RR thefts where thieves used a device to copy the signal sent by the keys when locking. Used the same code to then unlock and steal the RR within seconds, no alarm or key used.

I have a tdci and a nanocom. If I plug it in after opening the doors and before putting the ignition key in it does power up but asks me to "recycle the ignition" before it will recognise the vehicle id and start working. Turning the ignition on and off, engine not started, it will read and recognise the vehicle.
As regards the OBD key coder, half of me thinks this is a scammer generated urban myth. The other half of me thinks it is a possibility, now or in the future. Has anybody got positive proof that it exists?
 
I still think it's likely a scam and the fake link to Thatcham will allow the scammers to access your computer.
As l said elsewhere on this forum, they will get your address from this and will then know where a Defender lives.
 
I'm with you on that one Lightning. Apart from forum postings the source of the OBD port rumour seems to be the north yorks police memo which I am convinced is bogus.

Interesting... I'll check my TD5 tomorrow see if it does the same. I suppose those with lockable cubby boxes could move the OBD port inside that for some added security.
 
Remote switch in the power feed to the OBD. Location known only to you.
Thinking about the nanocom, logically it must work without the engine running to read faults which are stopping it running?

I need to double check mine, as when I have tried in the past I get 'Unable to communicate with ECU' if I've started it, left it plugged in, and turned it off.

Remote power switch is a good idea though!
