Well changed the pinion bearing on the rear diff and it is more than the bearing as I'm now getting a clonk as the wheels/diff go round so must be either diff or drive shafts with tooth/teeth missing well f*/*+d off now . Anyone know of someone breaking a P38?
On another note does anybody know how to tell a 2 pin diff from a 4.0ltr from a 4 pin from a diesel/4.6 from looking at the axle or does the diff need to be removed?

Thanks Craig

I only had to change the bearing that was on the end of the diff housing no shims. I take it changing the diff is going to be a bigger job than I thought as you mention shims? will it be easier to change complete axle?

Thanks Craig

According to the rave cd changing the diff looks to be quite a simple job? I take it that the shims are if you are rebuilding the diff which I would not even contemplate doing since you can buy new for abot £500 from Island 4x4.

changing the diff is dead simple.

drain oil
remove half shafts
remove rear prop
undo bolts around diff leaving one at top on loose.
take weight of diff nose on trolley jack
remove top nut
lower diff CAREFULLY on trolley jack, balancing diff precariously
drag diff out from under car

as in all haynes manuals, replacement is a reverse of the above procedure.
make sure you get new diff gasket and drive shaft gaskets.

good luck
