I have a 1.8XEI 2000 Freelander, bought it 6 months ago.
4 weeks ago it wouldn't start one morning. Would turn over, but it was like it wasn't getting any petrol. Rang the garage, they said they would send out a tow truck. It took a while to come, so i was trying to start it every so often. After a while, about 1.5 hours. It just started, now the sun was out and it had heated up. Brought it to the garage anyways, they couldn't find a problem. This happened again the following day i got it back. Didn't work for the whole weekend then, as it was raining the whole time.

The following monday garage came out and picked it up. Looked at it and dried the plug and leads, started fine then. Took it home, next day same thing. wouldn't start. Now the night was dry, so it definitey wasn't rain.
Garage towed it in, didn't work for them, they said they were getting an error on their computers, a crank angle sensor. They replaced that, and were confident that was the problem.

Next day, didn't start again.... its been in the garage for 2 weeks now and they can't find a fault... Anyone come accross this before?

It's under warranty, and i feel they just dont want to spend money replacing plarts.

dampsquid dont give up, wait awhile and some one will have the right answer. sorry but I dont have a clue what the problem is. but there are some very knowledgeable people on here

I didnt offer any suggestions cos I thought your garage would deal with it and its under warranty

Change your garage, if they havent isolated a problem by now they are incompetent.

Its a strange problem all the same. Usually the k-series either starts or it doesnt, regardless of hot or cold.

Does your fuel pump prime when you turn ignition on? It makes a distinctive whining noise from under rear seat.
Whats the inside of the dizzy cap like? has the entre semi conductor contact for the coil worn down?

More than likely its a sensor, but crank position sensor is for timing, it would run like a lame dog if its faulty.
Most likely cause is air intake sensor downstream of the throttle body, although this should show up on diagnostic equipment from your garage. Sometimes cleaning the end of it can help.

Reset your stepper motor (throttle position sensor) by:

Turn ignition to position II so ignition light comes on, depress throttle pedal to the floor 5 times in succession. Turn ignition off.

Fingers crossed
