Been lurking on this site lots & happy to finally have something to contribute. I believe this is worthy of a new thread as I couldn’t find anything matching my symptoms:
As the title suggests, there were worrying noises coming from the engine bay when the turbo kicked in. It’s also worth mentioning that every time this happened I had an ungodly amount of thick smoke coming out the exhaust.
Good news: it’s not the timing chain.
Better news: it’s the low pressure fuel pump located under the rear offside wheel arch (back right). Part cost £35 from eBay. The new one is very noisy, making a good buzz when priming. This makes me happy as I now have a stimulus to alert that it is indeed working!
Bits done before fuel pump included:
Fuel pressure sensor
Injector seals replaced & injectors cleaned
Intercooler & pipes removed & flushed
Air temp sensor replaced (surprising what a difference that made)
Oil & filter service
A bit more info about the diagnostic process:
I thought I’d fixed it after reconning the injectors, however in hindsight the fuel pump must have been working temperamentally.
A pessimistic and fearful part of me feared a turbo issue as the symptoms (smoke, clicking and power stutter) always happened under load when the turbo was just starting to hit high speeds, however I could still hear it spooling up below 1,500 so figured, hey, that’s healthy enough… then something in my head clicked: when a turbo kicks in, the engine needs more fuel to compensate, if the injectors are freshly serviced & I’ve put a new fuel pressure sensor in… maybe they aren’t getting enough fuel? So looked on the forum and found some vaguely similar descriptions of my issue & only saw one or two comments / anecdotes relating to the fuel pump, but decided it was worth a shot and here we are back in ship shape at 161,000 miles.
I hope this thread can help someone else out who may or may not be about ready to “get the damn thing fixed and just bloody sell it”. Because now that she is back on form i’m back to being tremendously charmed by what the freelander 1 has to offer!
Best wishes all
