Hello to all
Why the title???

DMF or SMF?
I have read so many comments that honestly I don't know what to think or decide when time comes?
Lots of people are against others total in favour. Some say it destroys the engine others made more than 300k with no issues.

What are your thoughts?

For me there is no competition, keep the DMF and just replace the clutch unless of course it's knackered.
If it is fecked and you have to replace it then DMF if your a boy racer or want the smoothest clutch and SMF if you are very gentle with your feet and do a lot of towing.
 
I don't race or do any crazy gear shifting. I like to cruise. Since I have my FL I never towed anything. and the previous owners only towed a small trailer with dogs ....
 
SMF you will notice all the vibrations from a diesel engine. But will be more reliable and takes more abuse.

DMF more refined, less vibration, but more likely to fail if abused.

They say DMF's were invented because diesel drivers didnt like the noise and vibrations inherently caused by a diesel engine... they wanted the economy but not the roughness.

Having said that my V6 petrol golf had a DMF..???? And a V6 is supposed to be inherently as smooth as silk.

How many miles? how many previous clutches?
unless you're very unlucky you won't need a new flywheel.

So did the Rover KV6 when installed in the R75. However the same engine in the MG ZS 180 had a solid flywheel, and the engine revved much more freely as a result, and vibration from the KV6 was negligible, so I couldn't see the point of the DMF in the R75.

Sorry for late reply, being a front line worker sometimes its difficult to have time.
I started this post not that my clutch is bad, my HSE is 120k I don't know if the clutch was ever replaced, it had 3 owners ..and they were ladies. I have no records but so far it works perfect and smooth.

I just wanted to know your opinions about dual or single. I have the Freelander and 407 both the 407 and FL are DMF. so far I guess I only had a diesel with SMF and it was a 1994 Clio 1.9 D. So I was curious to know what vibrations people talk about. If its like driving the Clio …well I don't mind changing to a SMF on the LR.
Because the Clio was very smooth.

I also read the post from Nodge about SMF braking the crankshafts but like Nodge say its a design error and not caused by DMF or SMF.
But mainly was to know if anyone did the conversion and if all is ok, and experiences, in terms of vibrations or more hard clutch any changes good or bad.
