Hi Guys,

New on here & a new driver. [Mid 30's] [Not a drug addled teen doper] !

Owned only a 2001 Volkswagen Passat estate before....£50.00 a WEEK insurance.....WITHOUT any break down cover.....from tesco being the BEST I got offered via gocompare.[Worst being £10,000.00...on a car that cost a grand] The AA who taught me to drive...didn't feel like giving me anywhere near the quote tesco did...Hows that for confidence !?

Also got buggered by local council charging me £150.00 to park outside my own place....only to hear from other tenants I just met...that NO ONE there had to pay it because there were too few parking bays behind the block..or something !

[ie : NONE of that gave me any sense of "freedom" owning a car in london...Just a bunch of bills & red tape & out & out chores to deal with !] heh !

Anyways...VW had a condensation problem...electrics failed....couldn't even central lock it....after a drive with hazard ligths coming on on their own....So had to scrap it...because had NO breakdown cover of any kind...

...and so am saving my ass off now for a 4x4 that can handle "moisture".A Landy seems like a winner !!

Rust is endearing isn't it !?

Adds character ! heheh

Well, I meant more to do with electrics....apparently a "vent"...or something clogged up in my VW and a puddle & mold developed within 3 days !!!!

Thanks for the Insurance tip. Will give them a go.

watch out for LEZ with 4x4s if its registers as a commercial can cost like £150 a day to drive in london or get new exhaust fitted for like £3k which will just get nicked :)

drains can clog up in landys too. and depending on the age of the land rover you could ave a load of electrical problems. i have recently been haping electrical problems with mine (all sorted now x fingers) and the sunroof drainage channel had got blocked so lets in a bit of moisture and corroded.... just forewarning you land rovers are sent to test you and blood sweat and tears do go into working on them

Simple check around all the specialist and if its still too much then move out if london.
I wouldnt drive in london on a regular basis if you paid me too.

As for the passat its a common issue on poorly maintained cars and is a 2 min job to check and a 20 min job to fix.

My Defender has no electrical problems at all, but then it has no electric gizmo's either. Discovery 2's don't rust as badly as Disco 1's, and Defenders are less rust prone than older Disco 1&2's. Discovery's are a much better road vehicle and only the commercial variant is subject to LEZ charges.

Thanks for info guys.

Was an education all day yesterday on Landys. {Here & elsewhere} I had had the impression they were impervious to....anything...military design & the "wasn't broke so they didn't fix it" comments on top gear. >>>> Land Rover Defender Top Gear Review - YouTube

I am kinda looking for something 4x4 & most reliable...as wanna {one day} tour around Europe's hilly sections.Other than a Land Rover Defender...a hard top pick up was on my mind..!

Don't believe Top Gear. Military design just means built by the lowest bidder.

If you want to tour Europe you can do that in a SmartCar. If you live in London you don't need a 4x4, especially not a pickup or similar as they are commercial vehicles. You will get financially ruined if your currents costs already have you QQing.

If you must have a 4x4 (and god only knows why, I've only needed mine 4 times in the last two years), get one that works, get a Jap. Based on where you live, a Jimny or a Shogun Pinin should do the trick.

I like rust.. the added thrill of getting tetnus from getting in and out just makes it more of a thrill to drive.
