Lads, need some advice.
Recently fitted a new alternator, working well showing 14vdc on tickover. Battery reads 13vdc with engine off. Parked up this morning for an hour then it wouldn't start, not even turnover. Managed to bump start and drove home. This happened a few months ago, possibly a dodgy starter? Help. 300tdi in a 1998 110 defender.

The thin wire on the starter motor- make sure it's clean and tight and getting 12v when the key is in the cranking position. Report back with your findings.

Thanks for that Flossie. The thin wire female spade was indeed loose. When I attempted to check the tightness of the main 3 wire connection it broke off the solenoid. I've removed the starter and am giving it to a local specialist on Monday for a refurb.

Hahaha! You aren't the first to do that!
That stud that broke off needs to be held at its base with another spanner to stop it turning. Easier said than done though if access is difficult.
