'olla.

just a few quick questions with regards to my manual steering box.

steering has been pretty vague since i bought my 90 but last weekend it seemed to become even more heavy. usually when its moving its no trouble, but this weekend i was finding i had to apply more effort to turn.

when i had my MOT they said i had a leaking sterring box, which i knew anyway cos there is oil down the... drop arm? anyway. i looked in the haynes manual and it doesnt say anything about fixing etc.

so my question is, can i just fill it up with EP90 or am i looking at a replacement unit?

again im assuming this is the problem as it has been leaking since i got my 90 back in june.

cheers.

well griff me old dawg, the simple answer is yes and yes.

in an ideal world, yes you should replace it, but in a realistic world, just keep topping it up, but, the big question is, when do you stop. for example, how much is a replacement box, and, how much are you going to spend on ep90. how long are you planning on keeping the 90. then comes the issue of do you fit a new box to sell it, in which case you might as well fit one now and benefit from it, or are you going to sell it with a leaky box, if so, they will knock you down because of it. the choice my dear boy, is all yours.

aaaahhh questions, questions ;)

always the 1st to respond aint yer yella :) cheers.

well i just had a quick look at paddocks and cant find a manual box... yes i can. £182 ex VAT!

screw that. so yes to EP90. it takes less than 0.5l to fill anyway.

what i was getting at though yella was WHERE do i fill it up? i cant seem to see a plug and i dont want to start unscrewing things incase it falls apart.

aww dear. everytime i go greenlaning something goes wrong!

gotta drive to bodmin this weekend... going to go via sidmouth and get me some car parts from the sea :)

yer, maybe i will get it sorted. how hard would it be to upgrade to PAS and could i do it myself? i kinda half heartedly looked into it, i guess i need more than just a box and bottle of fluid. prob cost alot.

so for now can i just fill up on ep90? please can i have the answer, please! and where do i put it.

yer i av and it dont say nuffin about the steerin box cept take a PAS to the dealer and here is how to take the box out (refitting is the reverse of removal) blah blah blah... looks like a stiff steering 6hr round trip to bodmin for me this weekend!

cant be any diff from a SIII box. its only a 1984 90

To slow the leak down put neat STP in it, it is what i use in the competition steering racks that i use on my race and rally cars. I used to use neat STP in the steering box and on the swivels on my old 109 safari back in the 80's, never leaked and gave silky smooth steering.

Just had a thought, is it one of your track rod ends gone tight on the ball joint, if as you say it has only become a problem after doing some "laning", or even a swivel lost some oil?

could be a swivel, i replaced the oils 2 weeks back. why would the track rod end go tight? taking a bash? i didnt do anything crazy on the lanes. just lots of mud and water.

so use STP as a direct replacement to EP90? what exactly is it?

cheers stig. will check rods now.

ok rods and stuff seem fine. nowhere on the steering box with obvious filler plug but the let hand swivel is ****ing oil all over my tire sidewalls!

when i changed it, only a dribble of grease came out. i filled it with ep90 and now the seal is fooked. how easy is it to change?

cheers.
