hi all,i wonder if anyone can give me some insight on a problem i have just noticed on my freelander td4 2002,whilst accelerating at 70-85 mph the other day the power dropped off to about 60 then 50 so i dropped the box to 4th accelerated hard and it gradually made its way back up to 70 mph,the car performs perfect around town ,now it,s developed another problem,if when i accelerate hard[screw it] there is a raspping, hissing noise from the engine only when it,s under load,if ijust rev the engine theres no noise at all, also theres a bad smell like a sulphur gas smell around the car when i stop,do you think it has anything to do with the turbo as mentioned in other threads on this forum and do you think these 2 problems are related,i just need a bit of insight into the problem before itake it to a garage for repair, thanks:confused:

Well Judith . . .sounds very much like the old , loss of power on this forum ,type in search, loss off power , and follow it through ,goes on a bit, but some very good info from other members with this type of problem who followed it through to results that could help you , but first check your oil breather cap [think it twas merlinghnd who highlighted this one ] hope this helps . . .ming :)

I agree with ming. I noticed a similar smell from mine and was also experiencing loss of power problem but didn't connect the two.

The rasping noise might mean your turbine bearing in the turbo is on its way out? Others with more knowledge will probably know better but I don't believe that you would hear the nosie when revving up while in neutral because the turbocharger doesn't kick in when in neutral? I tried doing same thing and could rev up to 4500rpm before a limiter? kicked in.

Good luck. Hope it is something simple otherwise replacing the turbocharger will cost you 4 figures (which 4 depends whether you take it to the stealers or an independent).

Hello Judith,

Also check the turbo hoses. Before everything went with mine, the hose on the battery side with the 90 degree bend split lenghtways and would open up when a load was put on it. It was very oily inside therefore as I say to others look at the breather filter. This may be the slow start to other problems with oil in the air system.

Hope this helps

Merlinghnd
