Hi All,
A cautionary note to anyone interested on this subject, like me your noise could be a very easy "fix" on your Defender
Yesterday whilst turning sharp left I got an awful scrunching grinding noise from what sounded like the right front wheel or thereabouts. Each time I did the same manoeuvre I got the same noise. I suspected CV joint but on reading this and various other sources the noise could have been anything from CV joint, wheel bearings to disc shields to axles and diffs. First up was wheel bearings, I took the wheel off, cap, circlip, splined cap etc and the outer looked fine and no noises or free play..
I don't have a 52mm socket for hub nut so ordering was to commence to investigate further the CV joint and inner bearings etc. Purely by chance I let the jack down on one side and happened to rotate the remaining wheel on o/s and it didn't turn. The diff lock was on - Earlier that day we had a boisterous dog in the LR and he knocked several times against the gear levers! With the diff lock on and tight turns obviously the gubbins was binding up, very normal it appears - In my searches I didn't come across this as a possibility, probably just too basic a thing to mention for experienced fiddlers of these things, so thought I'd post it. Saved me lots of wasted strip down time at least.
