Good evening all.

Just brought a 1.8 2001 3 door Freelander. Took it for the test drive around the town. Drove well. Paid the money and took it home. On the way back, driving down the M6, I heard a noise when I get to 70 MPH. Sound like a whining noise coming front low down. Any ideas ?

Cheers

Possible seized VCU, disconnect the propshaft where it meets the transfer box and take it for another ride. If here is no whining noise then you have problems with the VCU and IRD.

Thanks for that. Its ok to try this then ? How far can you drive like that ?

If its that problem, is this a costly repair?

Cheers for now

Could also be vcu bearings, wheel bearing or mismatched tyres.....what are your tyres like? newest should always be on the rear unless all four are the same make and style and wear looks even on all of them.:welcome2:

I did a full circuit of the M25 two weeks ago with he prop taken off and it caused no issues. People do it all the time to save costly repairs to the transmission. Do a search in the search bar for 'mondeo mode' for some more info on it.

With regards to the tyres on your car do check they are all the same make and approx tread depth. Different companies make tyres the same size but there can be a slight difference in the rolling radius which puts strain on the IRD (transfer box)

Hi. Thanks for the info. The front tyres are low and near to the end of their life. They have more wear on the inner edge. The rear's are nearly new. So, if I was to get two new tyres, put these on the rear and bring the rear's to the front ?
