I have recently purchased a 2003 Freelander which starts ok though not always. After firing and ticking over for a short time, there is absolutely no response to the throttle for several seconds, at least 5 to 10 before the engine will rev. At that point, the exhaust is smoky but the engine revs freely if you keep the RPM over 1200.
Tried changing fuel filter and cleaning sediment trap but both were spotless as was the fuel when checked in a glass.

You really need to see what the live data from the sensors to check for any anomalies.
It sounds like a fuel rail sensor fault. Has it had the overly harnes fitted?

Thanks for reply, I have no history of work completed and not got round to checking for codes yet. Just looking at this stage for what might be a common fault.

There are a few things that can cause running issues. You'll need to get checking and testing to move forward from here. ;)
