Hi, this is my first post and I'm sure will be the first of many. I recently purchased a series 2a 5 bearing 2 1/4
petrol swb, as a non running project, I
Put on a new battery, fuel, new dizzy, coil plugs, Leads, I have ignition lights but no spark, is there any thing else I could have renewed? :(
Any help will be greatly appreciated ;)
 
Hi Tottot thanks for your reply, well lights hooter wipers all work so am thinking earth must be ok, next job weekend I think trace back all electrics and clean up. Will post some pictures soon , chassis and body work are mint for 44 year old
 
Is your dizzy totally new with new points, condenser, cap and rotor arm?

You say your getting no spark, have you checked voltage at the coil with ignition on?

Also test the resistance of the coil using manufacturer specs.

Don't assume new parts will always be right! I had a new coil that was faulty, a plug lead too! The quality of cheap plug leads can be shocking....see what i did there :D

Aside from that the dizzy is the most complicated part so it makes sense that you should focus on that. Is the rotor turning, dizzy installed properly etc...? It should only fit one way.

Obvious, but is your king lead pushed right on to cap and coil? They can pop off with air pressure and lose your connection.

Ignition needs a bit of luck in my experience. Take it all apart and put it all back on! worth a try init:confused:
 
Many threads about this - check the coil is wired up the right way round and the points are opening and closing. Make sure there's volts at the points. Make sure there's spark from the coil. Check the plug leads are in the right order. Check the timing. See the full diagnostic procedure by searching the site.
 
Thanks for all the feed back, basically lucas dizzy complete , Lucas coil and leads all new and plugs. I thought a cheats way just renew all and "plug in".will check gaps, timing etc weekend
 
If its a NOS dissy then you might find the points are "furred up" with oxide. This should rub off reasonably easily - be careful not to overdo it and ruin the points.

How did you check for a spark. First thing is to put a plug in the king lead from the coil and rest it on the block. with ignition on you should be able to snap points open and closed with an inuslated stick and see a spark at the plug. or get someone to turn engine over.

If that's working you may have the backwards in its collet. Or the spacer collet missing altogether (does the dissy spin with the engine) but most likely is the its not set up right. i.e. its sparking but sending it to the wrong plug...

Obvious safety precautions apply...
 
Been working on it this morning still no spark, then while tracing and cleaning all wiring I found a cut out switch(Derrr) her presto 1st turn of key and it burst into life apparently 1st time in 4 years, and it runs so sweet, keep you posted on progress
 
Well, made up new linkage for a rebuilt zenith carb, (took off a badly fitted twin choke webber )and drove it up and down road today. First time in 5 years, engine run lovely but when I stopped to turn round I couldn't engage any gears, I could hear the shaft turning inside box but not props. I had to go into 4 wheel drive then back to 2 wd to get into gear, could this be something just needs freeing up where she's been sat for a few years. Don't really want to drop box out if can help it
 
Check that your linkage is intact, and that all of them respond to the levers.

If you engaged 4WD and then back again and it worked, the chances are that one of the links is loose.
 
Had the same problem on mine that Oldseadog said.
On mine I had to mess around with 2wd 4wd selector lever in the middle of the road, intersection, stop signs... all the time because gear control would slip out to neutral. The bolt fell off one of the control rods/shafts and the mechanic of the PO just put a new bolt in. I only found out the reason after the bolt rolled out of the drain plug as I changed the oil in the gearbox.:(

So it's all making sense now, tried it again tonight but this time pushed hard into 2wd and it was ok maybe just wast force full enough .if a bolt is loose do you have to remove the box to gain access
 
It makes access a lot easier if you take off the tunnel, otherwise you are feeling about in the dark!
All of the knobs unscrew, and it's easy to locate everything from above.
