No Reverse Gear - TD4 Auto

Hi,

Been having issues with what turns out to be the transmission:

Drove into work today and discovered Reverse has vanished. Was ok when I left home.

So... does this still sound like IRD/transfer box problem? I've looked at previous reverse gear threads but they mostly seem to involve mechanics dropping a screw into the box or other garage bodges. The local guy did check all the oils on Wednesday but not sure if he did anything to the gearbox. And as I said it has worked between then and now (Friday).

Maybe he use wrong bolt for oil inspection/fill on Jacto ?
If done that, there is no "R"

Perhaps he did, not sure. Wouldn't that cause reverse to stop working immediately?

That did cross my mind. How would he have stolen it while I was driving though, unless he was clinging on to the bottom of the car like Robert De Niro in Cape Fear?

Maybe he partiality removed the wrong bolt on the gearbox. Maybe it took a few miles to detach, then no reverse.

yes and bell housing casing removed and brake band relocated ,fairly easy job once box is removed

One odd thing - the whining/whirring/annoying transmission noise no longer occurs when freewheeling in gear (foot off the throttle), whereas it did before reverse gear got stolen. Still there when the throttle's down though.

Taking it to an indie LR garage on Weds for them to have a look.

So... apparently the "bands" have gone in the gearbox. Is this the selector thing that goes when you try and take the wrong bolt off for oil inspection? Do they sometimes go for other reasons?

What sort of price am I looking at for taking gearbox out, fixing it and reinstalling?

There has been multiple reports of no reverse being caused by the N90 Solenoid on the Volkswagen 09A transmission (This is VW's Jatco JF506e, same electronics, slightly different outside housing)

I would at the very least test that solenoid before paying to have the transmission rebuilt.

when the wrong bolt is taken out the selector drops off and as said you need the gear box apart but I broke a band once when I had a ford car trying to pull a tree stump out I heard a bang and that was costly about £1000

there is only 1 brake band and it is part of reverse ,they do become dislodged if that bolt is removed as it locates one end of the band the other end is supported by the operating piston ,bands can and do wear through age or poor servicing extreme use etc,easy job once box is removed , but unlike manual boxes a gear is selected not by 1 gear but a combination of holding and not holding several epicyclic gear sets, rev band is part of that

So would this be connected to the existing transmission problem (whine that changes pitch with revs, only happens in gear) or just incredibly bad luck having a muppet mechanic break the gearbox while not finding what was actually wrong with it to begin with?!?

Unfortunately the car is currently with a 'specialist' and the gearbox is already out so I can't test anything.

I'm fairly sure the local garage messed with the wrong bolt, given that I drove it 300 yards home and parked up (when reverse was presumably still working), then drove 20 miles to work where I found reverse wasn't working. Reverse had been fine for the previous 400-ish miles of noisy transmission driving.

I guess there's no comeback though as I can't prove they broke it so bye bye £1,000.

Well if this was mine I would try this trick, it might not work, but then again the price of .102 music wire and a new bolt is peanuts. Read below. Not many people are aware of this trick, your case might not be recoverable and then again it might be too.

Jatco awd JF 506E ( five speed)
I would think that he has checked the wrong bolt and removed the hold brake for the cone that operates the fifth and reverse gear, maybe it held for a while, and when he he put the location bolt in it had not entered correctly. ( you check the level on the top of the gearbox to the left of the engine looking at it, its a plastic plug).But you cant really check the level unless you drop all the oil, which on lets out 4.6 litres,The box holds 8.6 litres, the rest of the oil is in the torque converter and the gearbox oil cooler, Its not normal oil,you can buy it in Germany, which is quality and mediumly inexpensive on http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/8-2x4-Lit...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

I have attached here a pdf file of the Jatco auto transmission, they fit this box to many vehicles but all are basically the same, if you do take to pieces, make sure the steels and the frictions are not burnt out or badly worn, if so you should inspect the alluminium piston for cracks, but for what it costs change it (28gbp) here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Jaguar...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649
